Lomachenko-Russell: Golden Boy Wins The Purse Bid

By Edward Chaykovsky

According to the World Boxing Organization, Golden Boy Promotions beat Top Rank in today's purse bid, earning the right to promote the fight between Gary Russell and Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant WBO featherweight championship. Golden Boy bid $1,052,500, while Top Rank bid $1,050,000. The WBO was told fight will be held on June 21 in Los Angeles.

The belt became vacant when Orlando Salido failed to make weight for his fight with Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, earlier this year. Then Salido beat Lomachenko (1-1, 1KO) by way of split decision. Russell (24-0, 14KOs) has been the mandatory challenger to the title for some time.

Arum murdered Loma's career in his desperation to keep up with GB. Shocking. Russell should win. Also, if Russell wins, his best win would have come against a 0-1 boxer. JAJAJA TBA is hurt

Russell should and will win. When I watched the Salido-Lomachenko bout...I saw NOTHING special about Lomachenko. Nothing. Salido was dominating that fight despite what the cards looked like. After Russell wins, Lomo will be the most overhyped 1-2 fighter ever…

I have been a fan of Russell but disappointed in competition and doesn't change with what I believe is an obvious win and possibly a brutal KO win. Russell is too quick and if an old man gives Lomo problems…
lol at GBP beating TR by 2.5k. You're already bidding over a million dollars, you can't spare 2.5k to match GBP?
The bidding is in a closed envelop...
What about Lomachenko? He's fought literally two guys, one of whom was a journeyman who beat him decisively. Lomachenko by UD or KO over Russell after losing to journeyman Salido? Lol lol lol
Funny. You're calling "journeyman" a 3 time world…
