Lianres Explains Decision To Work With Brother For Lomachenko

Jorge Linares (44-3) will enter the ring on May 12th against top pound-for-pound fighter Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1) at Madison Square Garden in New York.  He will be without his longtime trainer Ismael Salas who is training David Haye in London for his May 5th rematch against Tony Bellew.

In his corner will be his brother Carlos, his strength and conditioning coach Jorge Capetillo and veteran trainer/cutman Rudy Hernandez. 

The WBA lightweight champion could have elected to train with Salas for this fight but that would have meant holding his training camp in London which didn't appeal to the Venezuelan.

BoxingScene.com was on hand at a recent training session in Las Vegas and asked Linares how he arrived at the decision to use his brother as his trainer.

"I made the decision when I was in Japan with my promoter Akihito Honda (of Teiken Promotions). He knows my career better than anybody. We have been together more than 15 years. He knows everything about me and the titles that I have won, the losses that I have suffered. He knows everything about me.  My brother Carlos has been almost a year in Japan and he is now the second best trainer in the company. The truth is he keeps learning and he has a lot of talent. I think he will eventually be one of the best trainers in the world," Linares told BoxingScene.com.

"He has a lot of hunger to be one of the best. I don't say that just because he is my brother. He knows my boxing very well and he is working in one of the countries where you must have a lot of discipline. That will help him become a better trainer. Mr. Honda and I made the decision to use him and I am very comfortable training with him and Jorge Capetillo who is my physical trainer and my nutritionist. He is the one who is there at 5 in the morning and is with me till sometimes 1 or 2 in the morning."

Linares-Lomachenko will be televised by ESPN.  Welterweight Carlos Adames (13-0) makes his Top Rank debut in the co-feature bout against Alejandro Barrera (29-4).

Salas has done something for Linares’ game. Same way Salas did something for Jessie Vargas. And let’s see what Salas does for Haye’s game in Bellew. Linares was wreckless and got KO’d under Roach. Cuban boxing is all about reach.…
