Liam Williams: record, next fight and profile →
Tyson Fury has made the right call in moving to end the conjecture over the future of his titles by vacating the belts and allowing the heavyweight train to proceed to its next destinations.
As only he can, Billy Joe Saunders continues to add to what has been a comically miserable 2016 ring campaign. The unbeaten middleweight beltholder was forced to postpone an already undesirable first title defense versus Artur Akavov after reportedly suffering a muscle injury during training camp. Their bout was due to take place on October 22 at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, with the entire show now pushed back after another participant - super welterweight Liam Williams - also suffered an injury during sparring ahead of his British title defense versus Ahmet Patterson. The card will now take place on November 26 at the very same venue.
The Penge punch picker is flying up the world ratings – ranked sixth by the WBO and seventh by the IBF – and with seven of his last nine victims failing to finish, the stylish south Londoner has finally added potency to his purity.
There was a genuine buzz of excitement and anticipation among boxing fans when we announced back in June that two undefeated and top class super welterweights were ready to put it all on the line on a July date in Cardiff.
British/Commonwealth junior middleweight champion Liam Williams (15-0-1, 10KOs) was surprised when his phone rang and he was asked to become a sparring partner for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs).
Frank Warren has announced a blockbuster double main event bill for Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on Saturday October 22nd, featuring the mandated British Title showdowns between Chris Eubank Jr and Tommy Langford; and Liam Williams and Ahmet Patterson.
Liam Williams will return to the ring in the autumn. The Clydach Vale super-welterweight extended his unbeaten run in his last fight last month, exclusively live on BoxNation. And Williams (15-0-1, 10 KOs), who stopped previously unbeaten Gary Corcoran to retain his British title at the Ice Arena in Cardiff, will once again fight on the aforementioned dedicated boxing channel when he makes his comeback.
Our sojourn over the Severn Bridge on Saturday night proved a successful one and also demonstrated clearly the hearty appetite for big time boxing in South Wales.
Liam Williams kept hold of his belts in what was an ill-tempered affair. The Clydach Vale super-welterweight retained his British and Commonwealth crowns at the Ice Arena in Cardiff. Williams, who remains unbeaten, was the man who came out on top against Wembley’s Gary Corcoran, exclusively live on BoxNation, stopping the previously undefeated WBO Inter-Continental champion in the 11th of 12 scheduled rounds.
The response from fight fans in Wales to our stacked card in Cardiff next Saturday, I have to say, has been terrific. From the moment the match of the unbeaten pair of Liam Williams and Gary Corcoran was first mooted to be on the home patch of British champion Liam, the interest was instant and the demand for tickets gathered pace straight away.
