Liam Smith: record, next fight and profile →
According to former IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina, there are ongoing negotiations to face the newly crowned super welterweight champion of the World Boxing Organization, Liam Smith, on the 19th of December in Manchester, England. Molina (23-6-2, 7 KO) broke an 11-month layoff on September 19 by knocking Manuel Garcia in three rounds. Now he wants to take on the young, unbeaten Smith (21-0-1, 11 KO).
A fight between new WBO light-middleweight champion Liam Smith (21-0-1, 11 KOs) and 44-year-old former three-weight world champion Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) on December 19 in Manchester still has a long way to go to be finalised says promoter Frank Warren. Speaking to Boxing Scene earlier, Warren said that talks are ongoing but he is in no mood to wait around for what would be Smith’s first defence of the title he won against John Thompson earlier this month.
Shane Mosley has withdrawn from negotiations to fight Liam Smith in December. The American's reluctance to accept an immediate rematch clause is the reason for the potential bout being scuppered, he has claimed. The 44-year-old, a former three-weight world champion, had seemed in line to be Smith's first challenger since the Liverpool puncher won the WBO super-welterweight title - but talks have abruptly ended.
Trainer Joe Gallagher believes Liam Smith versus Shane Mosley is a headline fight and should take place at Anfield next year. Smith became WBO world super-welterweight champion when he stopped John Thompson in the seventh round on October 10 and has already been called out by legendary three-weight world champion Mosley (48-9-1-KO40), who is now 44. Smith's trainer Gallagher told Sky Sports: "Shane Mosley has been out for a while and has only had that one fight against Ricardo Mayorga. I don't think he's rated at the moment but what he's done in boxing still stands strong.
'Sugar' Shane Mosley claims he is close to signing to fight Britain's newly-crowned world light-middleweight champion Liam Smith. Liverpool's Smith (21-0-1 11KOs) won the WBO crown when he stopped John Thompson in Manchester on October 10 and now seems set to make his first defence against three-weight world champion Mosley (48-9-1 40KOs), who would be making his UK debut at the age of 44.
A few weeks ago they argued back and forth on Twitter, and now they might trade punches in the ring. According to Jeff Powell of the Daily Mail, a deal has been reached in principle for Liam Smith to make the first defense of his WBO junior middleweight title against former three division world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley.
Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) and Billy Joe Saunders (22-0, 12 early) came together for what seems like the umpteenth time earlier today to talk about their twice rescheduled WBO middleweight title encounter. The two fighters once again showed plenty of mutual respect whilst outlining what they intend to do come the 19th of December.
WBO World Middleweight Champion Andy Lee and challenger Billy Joe Saunders will finally collide at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 19th December in a Christmas extravaganza.
WBO World Middleweight Champion Andy Lee and challenger Billy Joe Saunders will finally collide at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 19th December in a Christmas extravaganza. The premier 160lb fighters are raring to get in the ring and decide who is the best after seeing two previous postponements of their fight - Lee with a viral infection and Saunders with a cut eye - and both are promising to close the year with an explosive ending, live and exclusive on BoxNation.
Last Saturday, Manchester Arena saw one of the truly great nights for British boxing, surely the best of the year, with two exciting and talented young Brits winning in world title fights, both of them spanking Yanks. It took us back to the sport’s good old days. I was as stunned as those two Americans were at the way ‘Turbo’ Terry Flanagan and Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith dispatched of them both. Liam hunted his man John Thompson down magnificently to claim the vacant WBO super-welterweight crown and become Britain’s eighth full-blown world champion, cleverly tucking himself up and not letting his shots go until he knew they would count.
