Liam Davies: record, next fight and profile →
We are entering boxing’s award season. Over the next week, almost every magazine and website will declare their own favorite fighter, knockout, upset, promoter, TV pundit or walkout song of 2023.
European super bantamweight champion, Liam Davies, was determined not to box more than four rounds this year. Having stopped the respected Jason Cunningham inside a round in a July grudge match, the confident 27 year old insisted that his European title defence against Vincenzo La Femina would be over and done with inside three rounds.
Liam Davies carried over his newfound power surge into his latest title defense. The unbeaten Brit overcame a flash knockdown to score two of his own en route to a fifth round stoppage of Italy’s Vincenzo La Femina. A barrage of punches left La Femina defenseless forced referee Fabian Guggenheim to stop the contest at 2:50 of round five in their TNT Sports/ESPN+ televised battle Saturday at AO Arena in Manchester, England.
Nick Ball and Isaac Dogboe are all set to meet at the crossroads. Both boxers easily made weight ahead of their WBC featherweight title eliminator. Liverpool’s Ball (18-0, 11KOs) was a slim and fit 125 pounds as he faces his first former titlist. Dogboe (24-3, 15KOs)—an Accra, Ghana native who lives in London—was 125.2 pounds in a bid to bounce back from a WBO featherweight title defeat to Robeisy Ramirez earlier this year.
Overlooked and underappreciated or one of the best kept secrets in boxing? Within the space of 14 fights, Liam Davies has won and defended the English, British and European super bantamweight titles as well as a host of international belts. Still the man from Donnington receives a fraction of the attention that other less accomplished fighters are given.
FOLLOWING ON FROM our heavyweight Rumble in Riyadh, our attention switches to an equally bumper event set for Manchester on Saturday as we look forward to the at the AO Arena.
There may be louder and more high profile fighters operating in the UK but not many have got as much to shout about as Liam Davies. Within the space of 14 fights, underrated Davies (14-0, 6 KO’s) has collected the British and European super bantamweight titles and hoovered up a whole host of international belts.
In a fight that is certain to draw a bumper crowd from the city of Stoke, Nathan Heaney (17-0, 6) will attempt to realise his dream when he challenges Denzel Bentley (18-2-1, 15) for the British Middleweight title, with the WBA Continental championship belts also on the line.
WE MADE ANOTHER successful stop in Telford on Saturday night where the local favourite Liam Davies delivered a blistering performance to add another belt to his previous collection of three.
LIAM DAVIES roared to the finest win of his career, blowing away Jason Cunningham inside a round in his hometown of Telford. Davies had promised a career-best performance and he was in a rush to prove himself right as he caught vastly experienced Cunningham cold and applied a finish after just 2:36 of the first.
