New York - While many fighters look in the opposite direction when the name Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s) is mentioned, David Lemieux (34-1, 31 KO’s) embraced it last December when he stopped Gabriel Rosado in Brooklyn. The Canadian fighter said once he got a world title, he’d come back knocking on Golovkin’s door. He gets his chance to unify the IBF middleweight title that he won from Hassan N’Dam this past June with Golovkin’s WBA/IBO middleweight titles come October 17th. Lemieux is aiming at a coming out party on October 17th
“A lot of fighters are scared,” Lemieux said in a media round table in terms of those not willing to fight Golovkin. “I’m not scared of any fighter. I got the call from my manager, ‘what do you think of fighting GGG in the next fight, cool let’s do it.’ I’m not scared to fight anybody. I don’t have as much exposure as Golovkin does, but on October 17th it will be my come out party. I’m not going in there to fight Golovkin. I’m going in there to win.”
Lemieux has suffered two losses in his career but says he’s a better fighter for it. Without the two losses, his errors wouldn’t have been corrected.
“I had some cracks in my foundation early on,” Lemieux said. “I fixed everything and now I’m where I’m supposed to be.”
Some feel this fight may be too soon for Lemiuex and wish he had taken some title defenses at home before meeting the Kazak puncher. But Lemieux says the time is right now
“If I would have listened to what everyone said I wouldn’t be where I am right now,” stated the IBF middleweight champion. “This was the thing to do right now to be where I want to be. For every guy there’s a match and for Golovkin I am the match.”
Lemieux took issue to Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez saying that Golovkin would knock him out in 4.
“It’s very immature on his behalf,” Lemieux said on Sanchez’ remarks. “It’s not his fighter saying it and he’s going to eat his words on October 17th. On October 17th, the clock stops and they’re going to have to do some more planning after the fight because history shows whenever you speak too soon, things will catch up to you.”
As far as how long he feels the fight will go, Lemieux said, “Good question, that will depend on him.”
