WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1 24 KOs) is training hard for his scheduled mandatory defense against Nadjib Mohammedi, scheduled for July 25th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
There is one belt outside of Kovalev's grasp, the WBC championship held by Adonis Stevenson of Canada. The two sides have been unable to reach any agreement. Kovalev's promoter even requested a unification purse bid from the WBC - who approved the request - but then Main Events withdrew from the purse bid after it was clear they would likely get outbid.
"Stevenson is a piece of sh*t. I’m not chasing [him]. I don’t have to prove myself to him. He’s not ready to fight me," Kovalev said.
Another possible fight for Kovalev is clash with undefeated Olympic gold medal winner Andre Ward, who recently fought at 172-pounds in beating Paul Smith. Ward, who holds the WBA title at 168-pounds, has yet to make a decision regarding his weight division.
“I’m ready to fight anyone. I want to fight the best. If Andre Ward wants to fight, then let’s do it. I would welcome that very much," Kovalev said.
