While Sergey Kovalev will defend his WBO world title against Eleider Alvarez on August 4th in Atlantic City, he will be tuning into Showtime this weekend as WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson will defend his title against former 168-pound belt-holder Badou Jack.
The contest takes place in Toronto, with Jack taking his second fight at 175 after demolishing Nathan Cleverly last August as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard in Las Vegas.
"Of course I will watch this fight," said Kovalev this past Saturday where the formal announcement was made for his upcoming bout which will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in AC. "Yes, I will watch this fight because it's my division and who will win. It will be interesting."
When asked who he favored, Kovalev answered - "I will be rooting for Badou Jack because I think he will have the most desire in the fight."
And perhaps he's pulling for Jack because he feels that unlike Stevenson, he will be more willing to participate in a unification bout against him.
"Yes, that's a reason too," said the reigning WBO titlist, with a chuckle. "Maybe in the future it will be much easier to make a fight with him."
When asked if she agreed with Kovalev, his promoter Kathy Duva pointed out that both Alvarez and Stevenson are represented by the same company - GYM - which is led by promoter Yvon Michel. She says the issue with making Kovalev-Stevenson has nothing to do with promoters.
''We were able to put this deal together as quickly as we did, easily as we did. We worked together and proved that the obstacle is not him, not me. It's the fighter (Stevenson) who doesn't want to get in the ring," Duva said.
