Kiko Martinez Wins EBU Title, Dominic Boesel Beats Koelling

By Per Ake Persson

Former IBF champion Kiko Martinez, 39-8-2, won the EBU featherweight title last night in Fuenlabrada (Spain) with a unanimous decision over reigning champ Marc Vidal, 11-2-5. Martinez dominated the fight and won on scores of 118-110, 118-111 and 117-111 after twelve.

Kiko, who previously held the title at super bantamweight, thus join a small group of Spanish fighters who has held the prestigeous EBU title in two weight classes. According to espabox.com the other fighters are Pedro Carrasco, Perico Fernandez and Roberto Castanon.

This was a rematch and Martinez appeared to be on his way to a win the first time around but had to settle for a technical draw after Vidal was cut.

In the chief support, Adan Silvera, 10-1, knocked out out the much more experienced Mariano Hilario in the fifth to win the Spanish super middleweight title. Hilario said afterwards this may have been his last fight.

Unheralded French bantamweight Georges Ory, 10-2-1, won the vacant EBU title with a close points win over Englishman Josh Wale, 27-10-2, Friday night in Vesoul. The neat boxing Ory built an early lead but Wale came on strong at the end to make it very close. The judges had it 115-113, 116-113 and 114-114,

The title became vacant early 2018 when Karim Guerfi relinquished it to challenge for the IBO tite.
