Khan: The Offers for Crawford and Brook Were Literally The Same

By Victor Salazar

New York - England’s Amir Khan (33-4, 20 KO’S) had a decision to make.

He had offers to fight his countryman Kell Brook (38-2, 26 KO’s) in the UK or fight pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford (33-0, 24 KO’s) for the WBO welterweight title in the US.

Khan and boxing manager Billy Keane hashed out a deal with Top Rank to fight Crawford in the US on April 20th on the ESPN pay-per-view platform.

According to Khan, legacy and Brook’s last performance versus Michael Zerafa were the deciding factors.

“I had to leave that fight out because of how bad Kell Brook’s performance was,” Khan told BoxingScene.com. If he had a good performance than that fight would probably have been next. It was so bad I think it’s going to knock the pay-per-view and tickets down.”

A lot has been said as to why Khan chose Crawford over Brook. Many people felt the Brook fight was more winnable and possibly a lot more lucrative.

However, Khan reveals that the offers from Brook and Crawford were not that much different.

“Maybe if it was double because its business at the end of the day, I would have fought Brook,” stated Khan. “You want to walk away from this sport in a position where you don’t have to work again. It wasn’t double. A lot of people were saying it was double or 2 million more, it was nowhere near that, it’s literally the same.”

Legacy is important to Khan. He feels he never got to fight the best fighter in the world when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was around. Crawford is ranked highly as maybe the best fighter in the world, pound for pound. He also has a world title.

To Khan it was an easy decision to make,

“This fight has the title and when I beat Crawford, I’ll be up in the pound for pound rankings, even if I retire after I’d be happy.”
