Earlier today, TMZ Sports reported that a deal was reached for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to defend his WBC/WBA welterweight titles against Andre Berto, who previously held the WBC/IBF belts at 147-pounds. The fight would take place on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Last month, Mayweather named Berto and Karim Mayfield as the two boxers in the running to face him. Almost everyone felt he was joking, but the signs of a Berto fight were gaining steam when industry sources revealed that Mayweather's upcoming fight would be held on CBS as a non-pay-per-view event.
British star Amir Khan has been pushing for the Mayweather fight since 2013.
Like TMZ, Khan believes Mayweather-Berto is indeed a done deal. Khan and Berto are friends and share the same trainer in Virgil Hunter and both of them are advised by Al Haymon (as is Mayweather).
"I think the Mayweather-Berto fight is done," Khan told The Mirror. "Berto is a friend of mine. He's won two of his last five fights. Mayweather says he wants an easy fight, so maybe that's the reason he's taken that fight.
"I can't see it being me. I've not had any phone calls from anyone. The last time I spoke to Al Haymon he said 'look, Floyd's still not made a decision. I'll get back to you' and he hasn't got back to me."
Khan is still holding out hope. Mayweather has stated that his upcoming bout will be his "final fight." Khan believes the pound-for-pound will return for at least one more fight.
"I still think that fight can happen because I don't believe Floyd is going to retire after a fight like that [with Berto]. I still think that he will come back for one more fight and that could be me," Khan said.
