In a recent interview, UFC president Dana White stated on ESPN's "Get Up!" that he had met with Floyd Mayweather's associates to discuss a potential fight with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
But there was one catch, White made it clear that he's not going to allow Khabib to box Mayweather. He wants Mayweather to fight Khabib in the UFC.
In August 2017, UFC superstar Conor McGregor made his boxing debut against Mayweather - who won the contest with a TKO in ten rounds. Mayweather, who retired from boxing in the aftermath, raised his record to 50-0.
"I actually had a meeting yesterday in Los Angeles about this," White said. "I don't want to say anything that makes it sound like, 'Oh wow, this could happen.' But we had talks. I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think the fight would happen in the UFC, but they didn't say no."
"Listen, if Mayweather wants to fight, come fight," White said. "You fight in the UFC. We're not boxing him. We did that once. That's over. You want to fight? You come fight a real fight."
Khabib, with a perfect MMA record of 27-0, is not looking to face Mayweather in the octagon. He wants a boxing match.
Khabib's manager tells TMZ Sports that Mayweather has no chance under MMA rules. He believes a fight under MMA rules would be a complete mismatch that likely would never get sanctioned in Las Vegas.
"An MMA fight, I don't think any state athletic commission should allow that," Ali Abdelaziz told TMZ ... "It would be illegal. It would be voluntary manslaughter."
Abdelaziz is confident the contest would be far more competitive in a boxing match - and he's confident his man could beat the 41-year-old veteran.
However, he's not convinced Mayweather is really down to fight - and basically using Khabib's name to stay relevant.
"Khabib is wide. When Khabib is boxing him, he will cover him. He will put his body on him, make him tired. Carry the weight and get him tired. I think 100 percent [Khabib can win]," Abdelaziz said.
"I think Floyd just wants to keep his name relevant. He's 57 years old. He's almost 60 ... He can't do nothing to Khabib."
