On Saturday night, inside of the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan, Las Vegas native Ishe Smith captured the IBF junior middleweight title with a split-decision victory over former champion Cornelius ‘K9’ Bundrage. After twelve rounds, two 116-111 scorecards favored Smith, with a 114-113 tally going in Bundrage’s direction. Watching the action unfold from his fighter’s corner, trainer and former light heavyweight titlist Eddie Mustafa Muhammad seemed elated with Smith’s showing.

By Jake Donovan - For decades, Las Vegas has been known as the boxing capital of the world, though a town without a homegrown major titlist. Ishe Smith finally put an end to that drought, becoming the first-ever Vegas-born fighter to win a belt Saturday evening. The hard-luck veteran did so in hostile territory, taking a split decision over Cornelius Bundrage in the defending titlist’s hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Scores were 116-111 (twice) for Smith and 114-113 for Bundrage in their Showtime-televised main event. Smith’s second-half run and emotional post-fight interview made for a memorable evening even when the action in the ring didn’t always accomplish that feat. The bout began painfully slow, as neither fighter offered much more than a jab in the early going. Bundrage was docked a point in round two for extracurricular activity during a lull, hitting Smith on the break and then again after shoving him to the canvas. There was initial confusion as to the deduction, as referee Sam Williams sent both fighters to the corner and deducted a point without saying who was being penalized and why.

Ishe Smith was much busier in his three recent fights (73 thrown per round vs. Garcia, Bruce, Guerrero) than earlier in his career. Smith also landed half his power shots. Bundrage lands and throws well below the wgt. class avg., but has pop. Smith needs to outwork Bundrage every round. Will he get a fair shake though in Motown, Bundrage's home turf. Smith avg'd just 15 of 51 per round vs. better competition: Jacobs, Julio, Powell & Thompson ('06-'09).

By Cliff Rold - It’s as quiet a title fight as one could ask for. It’s been as quiet a reign as anyone’s in the sport. Cornelius Bundrage, an alumnus of the second season of the “Contender” winning a belt in his late 30s had the making of a feel good story but inactivity and lack of access to big fights has meant a long time with a belt and few fights to show for it. All he can do is keep winning and hope, someday, to cash in on what used to be a lottery ticket (a major title) and now often is just a guarantee to get some steady pay. His opponent this weekend came to prominence first as a highly touted sparring partner for Fernando Vargas and then as a surprise early exit in the first season of the “Contender.” Ishe Smith has long been a fighter who has obvious strong traits. He’s pretty quick, he has good reflexes, and he defends well. It’s never come together. Here, in his first and maybe last title fight, Smith has a chance to turn a whole career around in an instant.
