Juan Carlos Salgado: record, next fight and profile →
The two fighters for this Saturday's clash in Puebla, Mexico went face to face at the final press conference before the press. Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1, 16KOs) will defend his IBF super featherweight championship against former WBA bantamweight king Jonathan Barros (34-2-1, 18KOs). Salgado is the bigger fighter and Barros is the more experienced of the two, with past fights against Celestino Caballero and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
Former featherweight champion Jonathan Barros (34-2-1, 18KOs) is having flasbacks of his 2010 bout with Yuriorkis Gamboa, when the Argentine boxer flew over to Germany to challenge the Olympic gold medal winner for the WBA championship. This Saturday he steps in the ring at the Gimnasio Miguel Hidalgo in Puebla, Mexico to challenge IBF super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1, 16KOs). "This reminds me of when I traveled to fight Gamboa," Barros said.
A top referee has been selected for the big main event on August 18th at the Hidalgo Gym in Puebla, Mexico. Hometown hero Juan Carlos Salgado, the super featherweight champion of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), will defend his championship against Argentina's Jonathan Barros. Veteran Tony Weeks will referee the title showdown between Salgado (25-1-1 16 KO's) and Barros (34-2-0 18 KO's). Televisa will broadcast the bout.
On August 18th at the Capital Gymnasium in Puebla, the reigning super featherweight champion of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Juan Carlos Salgado, will defend his title for third time against Argentine fighter Jonathan Barros. On Wednesday afternoon, Hector Garcia, CEO of HG Boxing, was accompanied by Ramon Green, manager of the club, and Juan Pablo Miranda, head of the Association of Boxing Puebla, announced with great fanfare the event called "Clash of Nations", which is headlined by the Salgado vs. Barros battle.
Juan Carlos Salgado knew a future opponent would be waiting in the wings from the moment Argenis Mendez and Martin Honorio agreed to terms for a rematch last month. The trick now is to keep that on the backburner while his next opponent awaits, as the 130 lb. titlist prepares for an August 18 defense against Argentina’s Jonathan Barros in Puebla, Mexico.
In a fight that started strong and grew nasty, 26-year old Dominican Jr. Lightweight Argenis Mendez (20-2, 10 KO) of Brooklyn, New York, scored a unanimous decision rematch victory over 32-year old Martin Honorio (32-8, 16 KO) of Mexico City, Mexico, on Saturday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Mendez initially defeated Honorio on a majority decision in 2010. Mendez secured a mandatory rematch title opportunity against IBF 130 lb. titlist Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1, 16 KO). Mendez lost a close decision win to Salgado in September 2011, scoring a knockdown in the final round.
IBF super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1, 16KOs) is ready to defend his title against a dangerous pro, Jonathan Victor Barros (34-2-1, 18KOs) of Argentina. BoxingScene.com recently reported how Salgado was returning on August 4th in Mexico and Televisa was going to broadcast the card. Barros has several good wins on his record and only two career defeats, to Celestino Caballero and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Barros is one win removed from the Caballero rematch, which happened after Barros won a controversial split decision in their first fight.
Very little has been lost in the career of Alejandro Sanabria, even in the wake of being denied a lightweight title shot. The fallout from a targeted July 28 showdown with Antonio DeMarco proved to be minimal, as Sanabria’s ring return is pushed back a week to August 4. The lightweight contender will appear on the undercard of a Televisa telecast headlined by 130 lb. titlist Juan Carlos Salgado in a voluntary defense. While nothing is set in stone regarding the future, there is motivation behind the two fighters being showcased on the same card.
Junior lightweight Argenis Mendez is confident that he will defeat Martin Honorio on July 21 at the Hard Rock in Hollywood. Fla. The Dominican Mendez, and his trainer German Caicedo, admit that Honorio is a dangerous opponent. Nevertheless, they also know his deficiencies and they will take advantage of that.
According to sources in Mexico, there is some discussion regarding a possible unification between IBF super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1, 16KOs) of Mexico and WBC king Takahiro Aoh (23-2-1, 10KOs) of Japan.
