Showtime’s first entry of its 2014 boxing season also served as the first head-to-head clash with rival HBO, as both networks offered championship boxing on its airwaves. The end result was further proof that dueling broadcasts continue to do more harm than good for both networks. Following a monstrous year in 2013 that saw Showtime ratings rise by more than 60%, its January 25 doubleheader from Washington D.C. averaged just 390,000 viewers over the course of the evening. The rating was nearly doubled by HBO’s own doubleheader from New York City, which delivered an average total audience of 777,000 viewers for its 2014 Boxing After Dark premiere. The tally comes 11% below the series’ 2013 overall average.
One showed no ill effects from a devastating loss in his last fight. The other looked a long way from the agony of defeat anytime soon. You have to get on him early and make it stick. Timothy Bradley built an early lead and held Peterson off in what ended up a fine fight. Amir Khan almost did it but came up a hair short (if with some controversy). Lucas Matthysse blew him out.
Methodical win for Mikey Garcia, who landed 29% of his 47 punches thrown per round (130-lb avg: 58 thrown per round). Garcia's occasional displays of power (and defensive prowess) tamed Juan Carlos Burgos, who avg'd 47 punches thrown per round and landed just 16%. Burgos avg'd 70 punches thrown per round in his controversial draw with Rocky Martinez one year ago.

By Jake Donovan - It wasn't a spectacular follow up to his stellar 2013 campaign, but Mikey Garcia was effective in dominating Juan Carlos Burgos over 12 rounds Saturday evening at Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City. Scores were 118-110 (twice) and 119-109 in favor of Garcia, who made the first successful defense of the 130 lb. title he acquired last November. There was no feeling out process in the opening round of the main event, with both fighters making their presence felt. Garcia was quicker to the draw, scoring with a left hook midway through the round for the first big punch of the fight. Burgos took the shot well, but wasn't able to score anything of note in return, instead settling for a series of range-finding jabs while coming up short with his right hand. The closest to a threat of an upset came in round two, when Burgos connected with a right hand that briefly caused Garcia's knees to buckle. The unbeaten Californian rode out the scare, making it out of the round but receiving a lecture from his corner urging him to not grow overconfident. Garcia offered a more disciplined performance in subsequent rounds, fighting at a steady pace and coming back to stagger Burgos in round three. A constant stream of jabs kept Burgos off-balanced, accentued by the occasional right hand to draw a rise of the capacity crowd on hand.
It’s the first split night of 2014 with HBO and Showtime going head to head with a pair of interesting title matches. HBO (9:45 PM EST/PST) features one of boxing’s with-a-bullet rising stars in Mikey Garcia while Showtime (9 PM EST/PST) presents a bit of a crossroads affair. Lamont Peterson, whose career hit the wall after a career-making win over Amir Khan, can’t afford a loss. A positive PED revelation after Khan left him out of the ring for a year and, after a successful return against Kendall Holt, he was mauled by Lucas Matthysse. His challenger is undefeated, if largely untested, but that won’t matter once the bell rings. If Dierry Jean is good enough to evolve into the challenge, an upset could be in the air.
