Joshua Greer: record, next fight and profile →
Australian Mayhem, Jason Moloney has his sights set on making it third time lucky on the world title front. The Top Rank promoted boxer is sitting high in both the WBC and IBO world ratings.
Jason Moloney responded impressively Saturday night to his first knockout defeat. The Australian bantamweight contender overcame a slow start against Joshua Greer Jr. and won a 10-round unanimous decision in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Moloney, who fought for the first time since Naoya Inoue knocked him out October 31, consistently landed the more effective punches once he went on the offensive in the second half of the third round.
Joshua Greer Jr. will be the first to tell you he didn’t know what to expect had he and Jason Moloney fought as scheduled last April. What he knows now is for the boxing world to bear witness to a reborn boxer in the ring this weekend.
Jason Moloney admits this simply is a fight he cannot lose. Another setback Saturday night would be a career-crusher for the Australian bantamweight contender. The 30-year-old Moloney remains confident he can become a 118-pound world champion, but he must beat Joshua Greer Jr. to move back toward contention for what would be a third world title shot.
Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney are officially set to resume their rivalry Saturday night. The 115-pound boxers both made weight Friday afternoon for a main event ESPN will televise from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma. San Antonio’s Franco came in at 114.2 pounds for a defense of his WBA world super flyweight title, slightly less than Australia’s Moloney (114.8 pounds).
Nine months after boxing’s most controversial conclusion of 2020, WBA super flyweight world champion Joshua “El Profesor” Franco and Australia’s former world champion Andrew “The Monster” Moloney will settle the score in the third chapter of their rivalry Saturday, Aug. 14 at Hard Rock Live at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.
LAS VEGAS – Joshua Greer Jr. thought he did enough to bounce back Saturday night from the loss that cost him a bantamweight title shot. The judges disagreed. Adalaide Byrd scored the bantamweight contender’s eight-round fight 77-75 for Edwin Rodriguez. Max De Luca and John McKaie each scored the action even, 76-76, which left Greer and Rodriguez to settle for a majority draw on the Terence Crawford-Kell Brook undercard at MGM Grand Conference Center.
The knockout king of the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble, junior welterweight southpaw Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez, hopes to put an exclamation point on his 2020 Prospect of the Year campaign.
Mike Plania’s perception of how Joshua Greer Jr. viewed him entering their fight Tuesday night gave the then-unknown underdog even more motivation to pull off an upset. Greer picked Plania over other opponents previously presented to him. Then, when Greer brought his trademark pillow to their weigh-in Monday and predicted Plania would go “Night Night,” that inspired Plania even more before their 10-round, 120-pound bout in Las Vegas.
That’s an increase from Thursday night’s ESPN show, which was watched by a peak audience of 392,000 and an average audience of 311,000. ESPN’s broadcast June 9, which featured unbeaten WBO featherweight champ Shakur Stevenson in a one-sided main event, produced the basic cable network’s largest viewership of three June shows thus far (peak: 609,000; average: 397,000).
