Jorge Cota: record, next fight and profile →
Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona - Cuban prospect Yoelvis Gomez had his knockout streak ended at five, but still dominated Mexico’s Jorge Cota in a 10-round super welterweight shutout. The scores were 100-90 three times.
GLENDALE, Arizona – Yoelvis Gomez went more rounds on Saturday night than he had in his entire pro career prior to this point. The end of his red-hot knockout streak wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the Las Vegas-based Cuban dominated veteran fringe contender Jorge Cota over ten rounds to take a landslide unanimous decision win. Scores were 100-90 across the board in favor of Gomez in their Showtime-televised co-feature evening at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Jorge Cota is prepared to advance from trialhorse to thoroughbred. The hard-nosed junior middleweight from Los Mochis, Mexico has seen his number called many times, most often as a durable opponent for the division’s top tier talent. On paper, it appears to be the case this weekend, as the 34-year-old slugger is set to face Cuban knockout artist Yoelvis Gomez (5-0, 5KOs).
Yoelvis Gomez admittedly didn’t expect to advance to the contender stage with so few pro fights to his name. The former amateur standout from Cuban boxing royalty did suspect, however, that it will take some time for his pro experience to eventually catch up with this talent.

Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions announced a much-discussed spring and early-summer schedule Tuesday. The loaded slate of fights includes seven PBC cards that’ll air live on Showtime and two Showtime Pay-Per-View events, which will feature Errol Spence Jr. and Gervonta “Tank” Davis. From March 26 through July 9, the PBC/Showtime schedule will be highlighted by seven world championship matches, including two title unification fights, and three title eliminators.
Yoelvis Gomez will have to wait a few more weeks for his 2022 debut. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that an intriguing junior middleweight bout between Gomez and veteran puncher Jorge Cota has been postponed. A hand injury suffered by Gomez forced the team surrounding the Cuban prospect to pull the plug on his planned appearance on a March 26 Showtime tripleheader from The Armory in Minneapolis.
