Jamel Herring is certain that his battle with COVID-19 last summer impacted his performance against Jonathan Oquendo. Herring wasn’t particularly sharp when he opposed Oquendo on September 5. The WBO junior lightweight champion was way ahead on all three scorecards when referee Tony Weeks disqualified Oquendo following the eighth round, but Herring didn’t box as well that night as he did during his previous two victories versus Lamont Roach and Masayuki Ito.

Jamel Herring did what he had to do to keep his WBO world title around his waist but his performance was less convincing against Jonathan Oquendo last week in Las Vegas. Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) started well and managed to build a significant lead on the scorecards in the first four rounds including a knockdown in the third stanza by a left uppercut to the jaw of the challenger. Then, in round five, a wild clash of heads caused two cuts over the champion’s right eye and the blood clearly started to bother Herring who was slowly lose his momentum and thus allowed the shorter Oquendo to push him over the ropes.

Jamel Herring overcame a bad injury to retain his WBO championship title against Jonathan Oquendo this past Saturday night in Las Vegas. The 130-pound titlist suffered a bad cut on his right eyebrow from the head of his Puerto Rican opponent in round five, a move that referee Tony Weeks ruled as an intentional foul.
