Jonathan Guzman: record, next fight and profile →

Jonathan Guzman saw his career hit yet another bump in the road. An all-Dominican battle saw Atlanta-based Carlos Jackson prevail in a disputed split decision win over Santo Domingo’s Guzman over eight rounds Saturday evening at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Judge Martha Tremblay (77-75) saw Guzman as the winner, overruled by judges John Porturaj (78-74) and Robert Perez (77-75) who awarded Jackson for his constant come-forward style in their ESPN+ aired preliminary bout.

Headlining the show, former title challenger Jose Zepeda faces streaking prospect Josue Vargas in a scheduled ten-round contest. Both boxers were well under the junior welterweight limit for Saturday’s main event, which airs live on ESPN+ from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City.

Jose “Chon” Zepeda wants a third world title shot. Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas, born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, hopes his hometown main event is the ticket to title contention.

Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona - In a battle of world title challengers, featherweight Chistopher Diaz (25-2, 16 KOs) bounced back from a decision loss to Shakur Stevenson. He won an eight round unanimous decision over Adeilson Dos Santos (19-8). All three judges scored it 80-72.

Felix Verdejo, Christopher Diaz, Nova, Anderson - Weights photos gallery - Eleider Alvarez had difficulty making weight for his last bout because he suffered an Achilles’ injury while training for it. Alvarez weighed over 200 pounds a month before he was scheduled to fight Sergey Kovalev in an immediate rematch last February 2. His injury prevented Alvarez from doing real roadwork, thus getting down to the 175-pound limit for that fight was harder than ever.

Puerto Rican superstar Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo, inching closer to a lightweight world title shot, will see action on a special Top Rank on ESPN show Saturday, Jan. 18 from Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y.

In his first title defense, on Dec. 31, 2016, he dropped a competitive unanimous decision to Yukinori Oguni in Japan. Guzman has not fought since the Oguni defeat, but he is targeting a return to title contention at 122 pounds.
