Joe Calzaghe: record, next fight and profile →
Former unified WBO, WBA, WBC super middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe feels confident that he would have beaten Andre Ward - had the two fighters met years ago. Calzaghe retired back in 2008, after winning a lopsided twelve round decision over Roy Jones Jr.
In the last few months, former super middleweight champion Carl Froch has reignited a war of words with domestic rival Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe was the top man at 168-pounds when Froch was coming up as a young fighter and the two boxers would often trade harsh words in the press - but a fight never came together after Calzaghe vacated his three world titles and moved up to light heavyweight.
Former super middleweight champion and Sky Sports pundit Carl Froch is confident that he would have knocked out two-division beltholder Joe Calzaghe - should the two of them collided in the ring a decade ago. Calzaghe retired from the sport with an undefeated record in 2009, while Froch walked away from the sport in 2014.
Joe Calzaghe has fired back at fellow former world champion Carl Froch. During a recent edition of his podcast, Froch explained that he was willing to come out of retirement for the right fight - and that right fight is a showdown with Calzaghe.
It has been nearly six years since Carl Froch last stepped in the ring, almost 11½ years since Joe Calzaghe boxed, but the rivalry that once burned deep in Froch is still there. He still sees Calzaghe as the one that got away. This week Froch revealed that he was sounded out by Eddie Hearn to take part in a “virtual press conference” for fights that never happened, a way of filling the void without any action. Calzaghe v Froch was one, presumably Ricky Hatton v Junior Witter could be another. Maybe the motivation might be to get Amir Khan and Kell Brook together.
Former WBF World Champion Robin Reid has turned his attention after boxing to preventing knife crime in local communities. Reid was a 3-time world champion, making 6 defences of his WBF world title on UK soil, along with winning WBC and IBO world titles and infamously giving Joe Calzaghe arguably the toughest fight of his career.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - At the time, 10 years ago this past Thursday… it was a giant pain in the neck. Waking up early to schlep 90 miles to an airport in Jacksonville. Gathering supplies to make the trip with an 8-month-old son. Enduring the “it seemed like a good idea, cost-wise” drive from arrival in Center City Phila...
By Tris Dixon - IT is hard to sound level-headed while having the ambition to match Hall of Famers, but Scotland’s classy Josh Taylor somehow manages it. The southpaw super-welterweight, who won a fan-friendly battle with the world class Viktor Postol a couple of weeks ago, has thrown his name in the hat of the World...
FORMER world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik remains content that he has fought for the last time. “I promised my kids at a young age and my wife that I would be done. They wanted me done shortly after I won the title,” said the Youngstown star. “I get the itch here and there but not enough to go back there. When does enough become enough,” he asked.
Joe Calzaghe is looking forward to watching Anthony Joshua perform Saturday night in what’s considered Calzaghe’s home stadium. The Welsh legend will reflect fondly on his own huge fight at Principality Stadium when he attends Joshua’s heavyweight title fight against Carlos Takam on Saturday night in Cardiff, Wales. That’s the venue, then known as Millennium Stadium, where the retired Calzaghe won his super middleweight title unification fight against Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler in November 2007.
