Abner Mares Talks Gonzalez Rematch, Potential Surprise

An anticipated rematch between Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez which was set for February was cancelled due to an injury sustained by Mares during training. Mares had a rib injury that forced him to withdraw from the fight and now a new date is being discussed. BoxingScene caught up with Mares as he was in attendance at the Saul Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo press conference in Los Angeles and asked how he’s feeling after the injury and the status of the rematch.

The featherweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs), could defend his title on the 22nd or 29th of March in Mexico City, according to his promoter, Osvaldo Küchle. The Mexican promoter is still waiting to receive the green light from Golden Boy Promotions, who hold three options on Gonzalez.

Eric Gomez, Vice President and head matchmaker at Golden Boy Promotions, told BoxingScene.com - that there is no doubt that Abner Mares sustained a rib injury that forced him to withdraw from a February 15th rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Mares visited Dr. Daniel Maldonado on January 10, who issued his report to Golden Boy [copy found below], and the former three division world champion was advised to rest and stay away from taking any contact to the affected area.

Jhonny Gonzalez is looking to make a voluntary defense of his world featherweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) before granting a rematch to Abner Mares, who is recovering from a rib injury. The fight was originally scheduled for February 15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Californias. A new date for the rematch will be released once Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) is given medical clearance to resume training for a rematch with Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs), who dethroned Mares last August 24 by way of a first round knockout at the StubHub Center in Carson.

WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs) expects the rematch with Abner Mares (26-1, 14KOs) to take place on either March 8 or March 15. If the date lands on March 8th, it would be part of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The rematch was scheduled for February 15th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and had to be postponed when Mares suffered a rib injury.

Several reports in Mexico are casting doubts on the announced rib injury to former three division world champion Abner Mares. Last week Mares disculosed that he injured his rib in sparring and withdrew from a scheduled rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Last August at the StubHub Center in Carson, Gonzalez stopped Mares in the first round. It was one of the bigger upsets of the year. Normally the news of a fight being postponed would leave a fighter gutted. Jhonny Gonzalez hardly missed a beat, however, when he learned his rematch with Abner Mares will no longer happen on February 15. The fight, which was slated to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, is now being targeted for March after Mares suffered a rib injury during training camp Monday afternoon in Mexico. “We received a call from (Golden Boy matchmaker) Eric Gomez, who explained to me that Mares has an injured rib and won’t be ready for February 15,” confirmed Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo, Gonzalez’ promoter in Mexico. “They are negotiating with SHOWTIME to get a new TV date, hopefully in March which postpones the rematch only one month.”
