There was too much unfinished business left for Katie Taylor, despite all that she has done to forever elevate the standards for women in boxing. The legendary Irishwoman refused to accept the bitter taste of defeat in her long overdue homecoming. The demand

Amanda Serrano continues to make history and print her own money. The record-setting, seven-division titlist achieved another first in a career already destined for the Hall of fame. Serrano became Puerto Rico’s first-ever undisputed champion–male or female—in the multi-belt era with her ten-round, unanimous decision win over Erika Cruz. Their fiercely contested February 4 battle was an instant classic but was just the beginning for the now 35-year-old southpaw.

Evelin Bermudez has restored her unified title reign. The 26-year-old Argentinean regained her IBF and WBO junior flyweight titles with a ten-round, unanimous decision victory over Tijuana’s Tania Enriquez. Scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93 for Bermudez in their TyC Sports-aired main event from Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The fight came less than four months after Bermudez saw her four-year title stay come to a close after a disappointing ten-round decision defeat to Yokasta Valle last November 26 in Carson, California. Valle became a three-division titlist with the win but opted to return to strawweight where she also holds the IBF and WBO belts, thus leaving the pair of junior flyweight titles up for grabs on Friday.

Road wins always feel like a little something extra. Defeating other world class professionals is hard work. Doing it in someone else’s back yard often feels like it takes a little something extra. The story of boxing is littered with tales of fighters who saw earned victories denied on the road.

By Corey Erdman - For a good chunk of the boxing fanbase, this past weekend was considered a light one on the sport’s schedule. Competing with a weekend of playoff football isn’t in the best interest of promoters in North America, generally speaking. Two of the sport’s major broadcasters in the United States aired three events, but many continued to look ahead rather than focus on the action in the ring that week.

Jessica Nery Plata has grown accustomed to life on the road. A brave showing was offered by the 28-year-old Mexico City native, who outslugged Montreal’s Kim Clavel to take a well-earned ten-round, unanimous decision in the first entry of the 2023 Fight of the Year race. Judges John Madfis (96-94), Guy Girard (97-93) and Nathan Alexander Palmer (97-93) all awarded the fight to Plata, who defended her WBA

The first unification bout of 2023 is officially set for this weekend. Kim Clavel and Jessica Nery Plata easily made weight for their WBC/WBA junior flyweight title clash, which headlines an ESPN+ stream from Place Bell in Laval, Canada (Friday, 7:00 p.m. ET). Montreal’s Clavel checked in at a fight ready 107.8 pounds, while Mexico City’s Plata was a surprisingly light 104.2 pounds, well below even the strawweight limit.

By Cliff Rold - One of the best stories of 2022 was an explosion of top-tier matchmaking in women’s boxing. While women’s boxing may not have the depth of the men’s side as yet, the most anyone can ask for is to see the best in the sport facing off regularly. We got a whole lot of that last year on all points of the scale with unification fights in multiple weight classes from strawweight........

WBC light flyweight world champion Kim Clavel will battle WBA queen Jessica Nery Plata this Friday, Jan. 13, at Place Bell in Laval, Canada. Clavel hopes to become the sport’s only Canadian-born unified world champion.
