Jermall Charlo doesn’t think Demetrius Andrade is genuinely interested in fighting him.
Charlo has questioned Andrade’s willingness to face top opposition since a bout between Andrade and his twin brother, Jermell Charlo, fell apart on short notice in November 2014. If Andrade does eventually agree to fight him, Jermall Charlo predicted that the undefeated Andrade wouldn’t make it to the halfway point of their 12-round, 160-pound championship unification fight.
A dismissive Charlo degraded Andrade during the WBC middleweight champion’s appearance on a recent episode of Brian Custer’s “The Last Stand Podcast.”
“He never wanted to fight,” Charlo said. “He’s signing all these contracts. Bro, they money hungry. They all want an opportunity. He has nothing. Nobody knows him unless y’all mention Jermall Charlo. ‘Who Jermall Charlo need to fight?’ Then y’all mention this clown. Nobody knows him. He not a record-selling – he not gonna sell out no crowd. Like, he ain’t – bro, like think about what y’all saying. I done watched this mother--ker get dropped so many times. Bro, I will blow his f---ing mind with these straight right hands. And I promise you, he can’t even last five, six rounds. That pressure different out here. Y’all trippin’.”
Houston’s Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) also stated that he was never made aware of the one-fight, $7 million offer that Andrade’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, says he extended in an email in December 2019 for an Andrade-Charlo fight on DAZN.
“If they offered us the right amount of money – $7 million? I get that anyways,” Charlo said. “So, to unify, come on, man, make sense, bro. Make sense, man. That’s all cap. Whatever happened between the team, I have never talked to Eddie Hearns, ever, besides on the [Instagram] Live, when he got on my Live, and I got on his Live, in the middle of my joint. Other than that, I don’t know what y’all talkin’ about. That’s all f---in’ bulls---. I’m tellin’ you, that’s cap as f---.”
The 33-year-old Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) signed with DAZN and Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing nearly three years ago.
The southpaw from Providence, Rhode Island, is scheduled to defend his WBO middleweight title against Wales’ Liam Williams (23-2-1, 18 KOs) on April 17 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. His fight with Williams will satisfy Andrade’s mandatory obligation with the WBO.
Andrade repeatedly has called out Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin since signing with DAZN and Matchroom. Charlo claims Andrade doesn’t want any part of him, though.
“Hey, let alone, I go up to 160,” said Charlo, whose next fight hasn’t been scheduled. “What, he about to try to campaign at 168? He signed with DAZN to try to cover his f---ing trail. He don’t have no money, he don’t have no contract, he don’t have nothing. He got like three managers. That’s why he signed with them. He know damn well that we fight on Showtime. Why would you run from Showtime? He tried to go to HBO. You remember? Come on, man, stop talking to me about that clown. Let’s get somebody on the line that wanna fight, that really wanna fight.”
Charlo is still annoyed Andrade withdrew from his fight against Jermell Charlo as well. Andrade pulled out of that bout because he wanted more money than the reported $300,000 he was offered to defend the WBO junior middleweight title against Jermell Charlo in December 2014.
“Let’s clear that up,” Charlo said. “I just finished knocking out J-Rock, right? This mother---er was in the stands [in December 2016]. He seen the brutal knockout. He’s scared as sh--. You know what I mean? He didn’t wanna fight my brother. He turned a fight down. That was like, bro, we trained our ass off to get ready to knock his ass out. And we get to the fight, the week of the fight, he turned the fight down. He denied us. That let all my fans down. He messed up business. It was a lot of money lost. It was a lot going on at that point. We even had to fight somebody else [Mario Lozano], my brother did. You know what I’m saying?”
