Jayson Velez and Oscar Valdez made weight Monday afternoon for their 10-round junior lightweight fight Tuesday night.

Velez remains nervous, however, about the possibility of their main event getting canceled. The Puerto Rican veteran has observed one ESPN main event after another being postponed or canceled over the past month, and understandably is only cautiously optimistic about his fight versus Valdez actually happening.

The 14 boxers scheduled to compete Tuesday night took their final COVID-19 tests following the weigh-in Monday at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. The results of those tests won’t be available until Tuesday morning.

Velez and Valdez have been tested multiple times since arriving in promoter Top Rank’s “bubble” over the weekend.

“Obviously, we are taking precautions,” Velez told BoxingScene.com. “I know they [are taking] precautions, too. But until I’m in that ring, to me, I won’t believe the fight is happening. I’m crossing my fingers.”

Velez spent time preparing for the Valdez bout by sparring against Jose Pedraza, a fellow Puerto Rican. Pedraza’s 10-round welterweight fight against Mikkel LesPierre, originally scheduled for June 18, was postponed until July 14 the morning of their bout because LesPierre’s manager, Josie Taveras, tested positive for COVID-19.

The date of the Pedraza-LesPierre bout was changed again, from July 14 to July 2, when WBO junior lightweight champ Jamel Herring tested positive for COVID-19 late in June. Herring’s optional title defense against Jonathan Oquendo was pushed back from July 2 to July 14, but it was scrapped altogether July 13, when Herring failed another COVID-19 test.

In all, seven of the first 12 main events Bob Arum’s Top Rank initially scheduled for ESPN have been postponed, canceled or altered due to COVID-19, an assortment of injuries and Jarrell Miller’s failed performance-enhancing drug test.

“It’s been pretty crazy,” Velez said. “And it’s frustrating because you almost are ready to step into the ring, and then they tell you the fight is not gonna happen. That’s frustrating. That’s why I’m just crossing my fingers. I’m not in that ring. So, until then, the fight is not happening.

“I hope everybody takes the precautions, that they wear masks, don’t touch anything, stay in their room. I’m hoping everybody does that.”

Valdez-Velez will headline ESPN’s five-fight broadcast Tuesday night (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). Mexico’s Valdez (27-0, 21 KOs), a former WBO featherweight champion, is regularly listed as at least a 17-1 favorite to beat Velez (29-6-1, 21 KOs).
