There are elements of his journey from Australia to the United States that Jason Moloney could have done without, but none to where he wouldn’t want to do it all over again.
The perennial bantamweight contender picked up the first stateside win for his fighting family, coming in a 7th round stoppage of Leonardo Baez atop a June 25 show from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The win was the fourth straight for Moloney, whose manager Tony Tolj had to navigate through a sea of red tape just to get the boxer and his twin brother Andrew Moloney approved for travel during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Moloney and his brother arrived stateside in late May, remaining in Vegas for a full month before departing after their respective ESPN headliners.
“I received a lot of support and positive feedback after my fight with Baez, which was great,” Moloney (21-1, 18KOs) told BoxingScene.com.
It wasn’t all glory for the Moloney family. Andrew Moloney (21-1, 14KOs) suffered his first career defeat two nights prior to Jason’s win, dropping a 12-round decision to San Antonio’s Joshua Franco which ended his junior bantamweight title reign and earned him a trip to the hospital to treat two perforated eardrums suffered in the bout.
Two nights later, Jason Moloney provided the family with their first win on U.S. soil in three tries. Moloney’s lone career defeat came in a heartbreaking points loss to then-unbeaten bantamweight titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez during the quarterfinal round of the World Boxing Super Series tournament in October 2018.
Four straight wins have followed, along with growing demand to bring him back for bigger and better adventures in a red-hot bantamweight division.
“I loved my time in Las Vegas and can’t wait to get back over to America to fight again,” notes Moloney, who remains in quarantine in Australia until later this week, as per the terms of international travel during the pandemic. “This is just the beginning, I’m ready to cause mayhem!”
