Jarrell Miller is as confident as they come. You really can’t blame him. Before he took on Daniel Dubois, he was an undefeated fighter with a checkered past but a ton of ability.

Activity wasn’t his friend as of late but Miller couldn’t stand tuneup fights. With a chance to get onto the big fight scene, Miller was offered a matchup with Daniel Dubois. A showdown against a former world champion, albeit a secondary one? Miller couldn’t sign fast enough.

Not only was the opponent a good enough name but the stage, the Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia on December 23rd, was equally as big. Miller made things interesting during the build-up. He cursed out practically every fighter that was participating on the card. His trash talk didn’t stop there.

One night prior, Miller jumped onto the pre-fight scales weighing 333 pounds. He flexed and smiled before nearly pushing Dubois off the stage. In years past, Miller’s weight was never an issue. However, this time around, he couldn’t get himself going.

It was a painful night for Miller as he stopped in the final round. Aureliano Sosa, Miller’s trainer, couldn’t believe his eyes. The two worked hard in the gym according to the longtime coach but nothing was clicking. Of course, some credit has to be lobbied in the direction of Dubois. However, Sosa believes that it was the excess weight Miller was carrying around that led to his downfall.

“I don’t think he was hurt. He was just exhausted,” Sosa told BoxingScene.com when trying to explain the knockout loss. “The weight definitely played a big role. It was a little bit of Dubois. He was moving a little more than we thought he would be but the weight was an issue and for some reason, the conditioning dropped after the third or fourth round.”

Time isn’t exactly on Miller’s side. He’s 35 now, has been busted for PED use in the past, and really isn’t on the radar of any of the division’s top names. Still, at one point, Miller was a talented prospect who threw punches from ubiquitous angles. His glory days took place when he was a bit lighter on his feet though.

The goal for Team Miller is to get him to shed a few pounds. It won’t be easy but Sosa has a set goal that he wants Miller to get down to.

“At 285-300, he would be a monster.”
