Jamel Herring: record, next fight and profile →
Newly crowned WBC junior lightweight world champion Oscar Valdez’s first title defense is likely to come against amateur nemesis Robson Conceicao in August or September, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told BoxingScene on Monday.
WBO Super Featherweight World Title Jamel Herring will serve as a guest commentator on Ring City USA’s Thursday night telecast, live from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and around the United States on NBC Sports Network.
The hope for Jamel Herring is to follow up the most notable win of his career with his biggest challenge to date. Whether or not it results in a title unification clash remains to be seen, although not the driving force behind the direction he next heads.
Jamel Herring respects and appreciates what the WBO has done for his career. The WBO junior lightweight champion still doesn’t intend to allow a mandatory title defense against Shakur Stevenson stand in the way of the fight Herring really wants now that he has beaten Carl Frampton. If that means giving up his WBO belt to oppose Oscar Valdez later this year, Herring has no problem taking that route.
A healthy Jamel Herring is a problem for anyone in the junior lightweight division. The message was emphatically delivered by the reigning WBO titlist in his most recent title defense, a 6th round stoppage of former two-division champ Carl Frampton (28-3, 16KOs). Herring overcame Covid and no fewer than four fight postponements in making his way to Dubai and registering his best career win to date.
By Corey Erdman - If ever there was a fighter who deserved a better ending than they got, it was Carl Frampton. Deserve is a tricky word within boxing, a sport which can present as a meritocracy but in actuality is controlled by the whimsies of a select few. Every inch in boxing is indeed earned, but sometimes a few more can be tacked on or taken away by the powers-that-be.
Jamel Herring retained his WBO super featherweight title after stopping Carl Frampton in the sixth round of their fight in Dubai on Saturday. Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) produced a superb performance as he squared off with Frampton (28-3, 16 KOs) at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai, dropping Frampton in round five and six, before Frampton’s corner threw in the towel.
When Jamel Herring last fought in September 2020, a headbutt caused a cut on the outside of Herring’s right eye that led to a premature stoppage. Although Herring was able to keep Carl Frampton at distance with his jab and timely power punches, Frampton was able to draw blood by opening a cut on the same spot outside of Herring’s right eye during the fourth round.
Jamel Herring is now pressed with his most difficult choice to make on the heels of securing the biggest win of his career. A rousing 6th round knockout of former two-division champion Carl Frampton extended Herring’s WBO junior lightweight title reign. The question is for how much longer, though nothing to do with his in-ring ability. The 35-year-old southpaw will now have 30 days to determine—in writing—his commitment to next honor his overdue mandatory title defense or else vacate the belt.
It’s not the ending he wanted but it is the exit that was promised by Carl Frampton in absence of becoming a three-division champ. The 34-year-old fighting pride of Belfast, Northern Ireland stayed true to a pre-fight promise that he would call it a career in the event he fell short in his latest title. Such was the precise outcome, as Frampton was floored twice en route to a 6th round stoppage loss at the hands of WBO junior lightweight titlist Jamel Herring. Their ESPN+-aired bout took place Saturday evening at Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai, which has apparently housed his final ring appearance.
