Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring and Shakur Stevenson have exchanged verbal volleys in person and on social media. They’ll settle the score in the Throwdown in A-Town.

Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson have spent nearly a year trying to figure out the best laid plan to meet in the ring. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has decided that more than enough time has passed by for the two sides to reach a deal on their own.

Jamel Herring is just biding his time. The WBO junior lightweight titleholder has been reported to be in serious negotiations to face fellow Top Rank stablemate and former 126-pound titleholder Shakur Stevenson later on this year.

As impressive as Jamel Herring looked against Carl Frampton, Shakur Stevenson considers his technical-knockout victory more reflective of Frampton than Herring. Herring retained his WBO junior lightweight title by stopping Frampton in the sixth round April 3 at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai. The 35-year-old southpaw dropped Frampton twice, once in the fifth round and again in the sixth round, during that scheduled 12-round, 130-pound championship match before it was stopped.

For months, Jamel Herring has been forced to listen to claims carrying a wide range of insults though all with a common theme—that he can’t not handle the challenger in waiting for his title. The reigning WBO junior lightweight champion is eager to prove the doubters wrong, making a point to be in the house for Shakur Stevenson’s shutout win of Jeremia Nakathila this past Saturday at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The ESPN headliner came with the WBO interim title at stake, assuring Stevenson’s place in line for the main title as per the terms established by the sanctioning body.

By the end of this weekend, Jamel Herring should have a clear view on his next fight. For now, plans point to his defending the WBO junior lightweight versus Shakur Stevenson (15-0, 8KOs), providing the former featherweight titlist emerges victorious on Saturday night. Newark’s Stevenson faces Namibia’s Jeremia Nakathila for the WBO interim title, which will further solidify his written guarantee of a straightaway shot at Herring (23-2, 11KOs) as long as he wants it.

Jamel Herring isn’t the 130-pound champion that Shakur Stevenson really wants to fight next. Stevenson would prefer to challenge unbeaten WBC champion Oscar Valdez (29-0, 23 KOs), the fighter Stevenson considers the man to beat in their division. Based on their schedules, however, Stevenson thinks it is more likely that he’ll box WBO junior lightweight champ Jamel Herring after facing Jeremiah Nakathila on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Jamel Herring planned to use this weekend as a business trip, although recent stories have put into question what exactly lies ahead for the reigning WBO junior lightweight titlist.

WBC super featherweight champion Oscar Valdez is still riding high after his sensational knockout of heavily favored Miguel "Alacran'' Berchelt. Valdez, now a two-division world champion, is looking for the biggest possibilities out there.

There remains unfinished business at junior lightweight for Jamel Herring. BoxingScene.com has learned that the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) 130-pound titlist intends to keep his title and commit to facing the winner of the June 12 interim title fight between Shakur Stevenson and Namibia’s Jeremiah Nakathila (21-1, 17KOs). The latter part was a condition placed by the WBO in permitting Herring (23-2, 11KOs) to move forward with his oft-postponed optional defense versus Carl Frampton earlier this month.
