Jamel Herring: record, next fight and profile →
Carl Frampton isn’t letting the current situation deter him from his goal – as he keeps his sights firmly set on a clash with WBO super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring and a chance to become a three-weight world champion.
Puerto Rico's Jonathan Oquendo is in talks to challenge World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight world champion Jamel Herring, as part of a card being staged by Top Rank on July 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The call couldn’t have come at a better time for Jamel Herring. Of course, the reigning junior lightweight titlist is in the same predicament as everyone else in boxing, waiting for the sport as a whole to resume in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A decision was made to hit up training camp, if only for self-maintenance.
WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring had a big 2019. He became a world champion for the first time when he defeated Masayuki Ito in May. He followed that up with a unanimous decision victory over his mandatory challenger Lamont Roach in November.
Jamel Herring (21-2) became a world champion last May when he defeated Masayuki Ito by unanimous decision to capture the WBO super featherweight title in Kissimmee, Florida. He followed that victory up with another win via unanimous decision, over mandatory challenger Lamont Roach, in November and planned on facing former two-division champion Carl Frampton in his backyard in Belfast this spring or summer. Those plans have been put on hold with the current covid-19 pandemic shutting down the sports world.
Last week Jamel Herring (21-2) took to social media to connect with his fans. Like ever other boxer, Herring's career has been put on hold as the world tries to get past the covid-19 corona virus. He last fought in November when he won a unanimous decision over his mandatory challenger Lamont Roach.
Former two division world champion Carl Frampton is staying patient, waiting for a new date to get his chance for another title shot. Frampton will aim to become a three division world champion when he faces WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring.
Whenever big-time boxing is able to resume, Jamel Herring remains keen on proceeding with the one fight that he believes will allow his career to soar to new heights. The reigning junior lightweight titlist is due to make his second defense versus Belfast’s Carl Frampton (27-2, 15KOs), a former two-division title claimant from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The two were due to collide on June 13 at Windsor Park in Frampton’s Belfast hometown, but never had a chance to be formally announced in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
By Dan Rafael - Talk to any boxing promoter, manager or television executive with an involvement in the sport and they will all tell you that when fights do resume they will take place in controlled environments without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic. While that scenario will mean cards will generate less revenue due to not having any ticket-buying...
Bob Arum believes there is still a way to move forward with the junior lightweight title fight between Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton. What it will require is patience, and perhaps a little bit of compromise on the part of those involved in the event. “Carl was pushing before all of this happened, for the fight to be outdoors,” the Hall of Fame promoter explained to Top Rank’s Crystina Poncher in an interview as part of the Catching Up With Crystina series on the company’s YouTube channel. “[England-based promoter] Frank Warren—who would be promoting the fight, always wanted the indoor arena in Belfast.”
