Trainer Jeff Mayweather, uncle to WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) is not surprised with the amount of blowback that his nephew is getting for a potential fight with Andre Berto on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Last month, Mayweather announced that he was going to fight either Berto or Karim Mayfield in what is being pushed as his "final career fight."
Fans lashed out, as Berto started becoming the frontrunner for the date. The fight appears to be leaning in the direction of a network television bout on CBS.
Almost every fighter from 140 to 160 is angling to get Floyd in the ring. Berto seems to be in front to get the assignment. According to Jeff, nobody else in the division would get this kind of heat for facing someone like Berto, who held the IBF/WBC welterweight titles.
"You see how they’re already making a big deal about him fighting Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto. Andre Berto was a world champion, why can’t he fight him? Why can’t he fight him but anybody else can?," Jeff told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"When it comes to Floyd, everything changes. The opponent changes, the status of the opponent, everything changes. No one else would drop down to fight anybody else but they would do that for Floyd because of the money they’ll make."
