Cut over the right eye from a clean hook in round two and rocked by a right cross in round nine, Naoya Inoue dug deep in the late rounds to not only add Nonito Donaire's WBA "super" bantamweight title to his own IBF belt, but also win the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament by unanimous decision (117-109, 116-111 and 114-113).
Naoya Inoue overcame the heroic Nonito Donaire to claim a points victory to win the Ali Trophy in the bantamweight edition of the World Boxing Super Series in Saitama, Japan. The three judges scored the bout 116-111, 117-109, 114-113 in favour of Inoue.
By Keith Idec - Naoya Inoue’s third fight in the World Boxing Super Series’ bantamweight tournament wasn’t nearly as easy as his first two quick knockouts in it. Powerful veteran Nonito Donaire rocked Inoue with a right hand in the ninth round, bloodied the unbeaten Japanese star and made him work harder to win Thursday night than he had do....
By Cliff Rold - When the second wave of three World Boxing Super Series tournaments was announced in 2018, the eight-man field at bantamweight looked like the best of what admittedly were all quite stacked fields. When Nonito Donaire is quizzed where he was on July 7, 2007, a night he was a heavy underdog in his first world title fight, he immediately remembers. “That’s the day I knocked out Vic Darchinyan,” Donaire says without thinking twice. Over the last dozen years, Donaire has faced and beaten some of boxing’s best that were thrown his way, including the much-feared Darchinyan that summer night, a knockout of the year winner and the first big win of his career that officially put him on the map.
Nonito Donaire believes he’s compiled a respectful resume through 45 career fights to earn his due spot in Canastota, New York. The soon-to-be 37-year-old Filipino fighter believes he’s a Hall of Famer as of this minute, with or without a win against Naoya Inoue on Thursday.
Nonito Doniare is not lacking confidence—or power, he says—heading into his fight against Naoya Inoue. The soon-to-be 37-year-old Filipino fighter believes since he’s no longer competing at 126 pounds and is now at a more ideal 118, he’s performing at peak levels because he’s fighting guys his size.
Inoue (18-0, 16KOs) and Fil-Am superstar Donaire collide in the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) bantamweight finale this Thursday in Saitama, Japan (DAZN-USA 5:00am ET/Sky Sports 12:05pm GMT/Fuji TV 7:57pm JST), though the finalists have taken vastly different paths in arriving at that destination.
