Just three weeks after his last fight, Mexican boxer Hugo "Cuatito" Ruiz will return to the ring with the dream of winning his third divisional world title, with confidence in his punch and the belief that he can shock the champion Gervonta Davis.
Davis was scheduled to defend the super featherweight title of the World Boxing Association (WBA) against Abner Mares, who suffered a detached retina and was forced to withdraw from Saturday's fight in Carson, California. When he received the call, Ruiz did not hesitate to accept the opportunity.
"We had already seen him fight, I do not rule out an upset, we can emerge victorious. I can give him a real surprise in the ring, I'm a boxer with a punch and I can achieve a surprise at any time," Ruiz said in an interview with the news agency Notimex.
On January 19 in Las Vegas, Ruiz was set to fight for the WBA' interim featherweight title against Jhack Tepora, who could not make the weight and the contest was canceled, but not the participation of Ruiz - who won a unanimous decision over Alberto Guevara
"(That contest) was not very demanding, Guevara did not present a fight, it was like training for me. I continued training and since then there wasn't much wear ... then they spoke to me and I get this big surprise with a fight on the 9th of February," Ruiz said.
In addition to the motivation and preparation, Ruiz said that the work for his last two fights has been to measure himself against left-handed fighters like Davis, "I've been working for almost five months" to challenge someone like Davis.
"I rested for three or four days and then I started training, I came in condition, I did not want to waste it, I went to the gym, they spoke to me about this fight, so I decided to take it. I took it because I feel capable of giving a great fight," Ruiz said.
