WBA super featherweight world champion Hector Luis Garcia smiles when they describe his Showtime pay-per-view fight against Gervonta 'Tank' Davis as a "preparation fight."
Davis will face Garcia on January 7 en route to a potential mega-fight against Ryan Garcia, which is targeted for the month of April.
However, the Dominican boxer (16-0, 10 KOs) warns that it will be a major problem if Davis views him as a safe opponent. because he is not the type of fighter that someone uses to get himself ready for another opportunity
Hector is a boxer that some believe represents a real threat.
Perhaps the main reason Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) chose to fight Garcia is the perception held by certain fans who accuse him of having faced weak opponents during his promotional years with Floyd Mayweather.
“It felt really good [to receive the news I'm facing Davis] because I think I deserve this kind of opportunity. I am a boxer who has come from less to more. My career has been transcending and everyone already knows me. This is an opportunity that I really need. However, many see this as a formality for Gervonta," Garcia told George Ebro.
“Every boxer is different, but he thinks that he already won his fight, because he already has a confirmed fight [with Ryan Garcia]. I think that will not be possible. To all these people [who don't believe in me], I say that [an upset] is possible, that nothing is impossible and that nothing is written. When a boxer like me, who has been boxing my whole life, gets an opportunity, he takes it. They can't say which one will lose until the bell rings. I am an experienced fighter.
“[Davis'] qualities as a boxer are good. It's not by chance that he's champion. He is at the top, but that is what motivates me the most and makes me want to fight him the most. Like everyone, he needs some direction. Everyone in the ring makes mistakes. The one on the outside sees more than the one on the inside."
