Hank Lundy: record, next fight and profile →
Hank Lundy is certain he has fought many better boxers than Angelo Santana. Entering their 10-round lightweight fight Friday night at Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Lundy just can’t envision losing to an opponent the confident Philadelphia fighter considers one-dimensional. Showtime will air the Lundy-Santana clash as the main event of a “ShoBox: The New Generation” telecast.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Tempers flared during Thursday’s official weigh-in as main event fighters Angelo “La Cobra” Santana and Hammerin’ Hank Lundy and their camps had to be separated after stepping on the scales for tomorrow/Friday’s ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader live on SHOWTIME (10:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). Santana, 134 pounds, and Lundy, 135 pounds, were posing for a photo with legendary promoter Don King and former heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes when a brief scuffle broke out between the fighters and their camps. King, Holmes and others were quick to separate the camps and restore order to the proceedings.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Legendary Hall of Fame promoter Don King and Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson held a press conference in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall on Wednesday to introduce the fighters that will compete on ShoBox: The New Generation this Friday, Feb. 21 from the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. In the main event on SHOWTIME (10:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), heavy-handed lightweight slugger Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (14-1, 11 KOs), of Miami, Fla., will face the dangerous, world-ranked Hammerin’ Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KOs) of Philadelphia in a 10-round bout.
NEW YORK – The first time Angelo Santana appeared on ShoBox: The New Generation he scored one of the most memorable knockouts of 2012. The second time, he suffered the only loss of his career in a shocking upset. Now, in his third consecutive ShoBox appearance, Santana (14-1, 11 KOs) will look to regain his status as one of the most promising – and feared – boxing prospects of today. But it won’t be an easy test as he takes on the more experienced Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KOs) in the compelling 10-round lightweight main event of ShoBox on Friday, Feb. 21, live on SHOWTIME® (10:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). The event is promoted by Don King Productions from the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mateusz Masternak (30-1, 22 KOs) will add an extra international appeal to the Nordic Fight Night in Denmark on February 1. The Polish cruiserweight faces Sandro Siproshvili (27-17, 13 KOs) at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn. Masternak returns having suffered his only career loss at the hands of Grigory Drozd (37-1, 26 KOs) in October. ''The Master'' will be looking to bounce back from this defeat with a convincing victory over Siproshvili.
Junior welterweight contender Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11KOs) is hungry to get revenge on hard-puncher John Molina (26-3, 21KOs). Back in 2010, Molina scored a come from behind stoppage of Lundy in the eleventh round. At the time of the stoppage, Lundy was up 98-91, 98-91, and 97-92 on the three official scorecards. Molina is scheduled to return on November 16th as part of the Andre Ward-Edwin Rodriguez undercard at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. After reading a recent article on BoxingScene, where Molina said he was having trouble securing opponents, and also pondered a move to 140-pounds - Lundy is prepared to help him out in both areas.
BoxingScene.com has been advised that junior welterweight contender "Hammerin" Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11KOs) has signed a managerial agreement with James Prince, who guides the careers of Andre Ward, Tavoris Cloud, Brad Solomon and several others. Last month, Lundy snapped a two fight skid with a dominating ten round decision over tough Olusegun Ajose. Lundy tells BoxingScene that he plans to target all of the big names at 140. He is currently sparring with Adrien Broner, who returns on November 9th - likely against Marcos Maidana.
Junior welterweight Hank Lundy's power shots the difference, as Ajose landed just six per round. Lundy able to snap a two-fight losing streak to win a dominating decision over the favored Ajose.
Desperate to stop a two-fight losing streak, 29-year old Jr. Welterweight Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KO) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, came up with perhaps the best performance of his career in scoring a unanimous decision over ten rounds against 33-year old Nigerian Ajose Olusegun (31-2, 14 KO) on Friday night at the Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire. Lundy came into the bout just under the division limit at 139 ¾ while Olusegun tipped the scales at the 140 lb. limit. The referee was Steve Smoger. In the first couple of rounds, it was the quicker and busier hands of Lundy telling the tale. Able to find the Nigerian southpaw with the jab, Lundy was set to multiply contact while Olusegun sought a big shot to get into the bout. A big shot drove Olusegun towards the ropes late in the third to further Lundy’s early momentum, though Olusegun didn’t seem hurt.
Hank Lundy knows his career cannot withstand a third straight defeat Friday night. The prideful fighter from Philadelphia must beat Ajose Olusegun in their ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” main event in Salem, N.H., if he is to have any shot at rejuvenating his career and fighting for a junior welterweight world title. “It’s a do-or-die fight and I’m letting everything hang out on Friday,” Lundy said. “I’m going to come in there and put on a show and get a win against a guy ranked [No. 3] in the WBC. It’ll be real big to come in there and handle business. That puts me in the No. 2 or No. 3 spot and gives me a chance to fight for a title.”
