Guillermo Rigondeaux: record, next fight and profile →
This Saturday night from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, WBO featherweight titlist Vasyl Lomachenko defends his crown against Romula Koasicha - who like Gamalier Diaz back in May - is a heavy underdog versus the two-time Olympic gold-medalist from the Ukraine. Is there a more significant fight in 2016 for this southpaw stylist? And is there any chance it could be the now belt-less Guillermo Rigondeaux?
The World Boxing Council has ordered a final super bantamweight eliminatory between undefeated two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux and rising Mexican puncher "King" Rey Vargas (25-0, 20KOs). The winner will become the mandatory challenger to current champion Julio Ceja, who plans to have a rematch with Hugo Ruiz in 2016.
Following the WBO's decision to remove Guillermo Rigondeaux's (15-0, 10 KOs) status as champion of their organisation at super bantamweight, attention has turned to what may be the WBA's next step forward with regard to the Cuban.
Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, President of the World Boxing Organization, explained his organization's decision to strip two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 12KOs) of the WBO super bantamweight world title. Rigondeaux captured the title in April of 2013, when he defeated Nonito Donaire, but since then he has only made three defenses. And Rigondeaux has not fought since December of last year, which has stalled the entire division.
Guillermo Rigondeaux is virtually unbeatable in the ring, but can't catch a break outside the ropes. The latest setback in his career progress came at the hands of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), who elected to derecognize the supremely gifted boxer as its super bantamweight champion. The decision was announced Wednesday morning in Orlando, Florida, where the Puerto Rico-based sanctioning body is holding its annual convention.
As previously reported, Guillermo Rigondeaux was stripped of his super bantamweight world championship by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at their ongoing yearly convention in Florida. The two-time Olympic gold medal winner has been inactive for over a year. Just weeks ago, the WBO's Championships Committee had alerted Rigondeaux (15-0, 10 KOs) and his promoter, Caribe Promotions, of the possibility of being stripped due to a long period of inactivity.
Miami-based promoters Caribe Promotions are in the process of finalizing a November fight for World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. The two-time Olympic gold medal winner was recently threatened by the WBO with the possibility of losing his title due to inactivity. Rigondeaux is also the WBA's "super" world champion at the weight limit.
Caribe Promotions have vowed to fight tooth and nail against the possibility of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) stripping Guillermo Rigondeaux of his super bantamweight world title. An expected meeting between Francisco "Paco '' Valcarcel, the president of the WBO, and Boris Arencibia, who holds the same position with Caribe, is being worked out but also does not guarantee that Rigondeaux will remain the titleholder.
Guillermo Rigondeaux has thus far proven to be invincible in the ring, yet not quite as controlling when it comes to garnering airtime. The unbeaten wunderkind from Cuba is now in jeopardy of falling prey to the sanctioning bodies. The World Boxing Organization has issued Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs) a "show cause" letter to convince the sanctioning body not to strip him of the title he's held for nearly 30 months. The southpaw claimed the WBO title in a 12-round decision over Nonito Donaire in April '13, laying claim to the World lineal championship in the process.
Promoter Boris Arencibia of Caribe Promotions, who handle WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs), has confirmed the statements that appeared from his fighter a few days ago on BoxingScene.com. Rigondeaux said he was officially a free agent, because his managerial contract with Gary Hyde had finally expired on September 15th. Both Rigondeaux, and Arencibia, deny the claims by Hyde, who says the fighter is contractually bound to him until early next year.
