Caribe Promotions have vowed to fight tooth and nail against the possibility of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) stripping Guillermo Rigondeaux of his super bantamweight world title.
An expected meeting between Francisco "Paco '' Valcarcel, the president of the WBO, and Boris Arencibia, who holds the same position with Caribe, is being worked out but also does not guarantee that Rigondeaux will remain the titleholder.
The sanctioning body recently issued a letter to Rigondeaux and his team, threatening to take away his title for inactivity. Rigondeaux has not fought since last December and only had three fights in the last three years, but the fighter has had promotional and managerial problems.
The WBO wants a letter with valid explanation over Rigondeaux's inactivity and why there are no fights being booked for the two-time Olympic gold medal winner (15-0, 10 KO).
"It seems incredible that the WBO, who never did anything to give us a mandatory defense for Rigo, and never pushed for others to face him, now comes to us with this letter,'' said Arencibia to George Ebro. "We will answer the [WBO's] committee and tell them all of them the truth to their face. I am tired of there being so much filth in this sport.''
"Rigo has challenged everyone and nobody wants to fight him. We have told Nonito we are ready for a rematch and he did not respond. And now Rigo is the one who is at fault. It's not fair."
