He threw away a potential bout with Antonio Tarver after claiming Tarver's camp was giving him the run around and never sent him a contract for the fight. A bigger opportunity fell on his lap, and he took it. Danny "Green Machine" Green (25-3, 22KOs) made it look easy by dethroning Stipe Drews (32-2, 11KOs) to capture the WBA light heavyweight title at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia on Sunday.
Green was the busier, more aggressive fighter, winning most of the rounds on the champion who was unable to deal with Green's activity level and had problems fighting off the back foot. Drews was so lackluster the referee at one point urged him to throw more punches. The judges barely scored a round for Drews, with cards of 120-108, 118-111 and 118-110.
The door is now wide open for a rematch with rival Anthony Mundine, who won an easy decision over Green in 2006. Their 2006 bout was one of the biggest in Australian history. The rematch promises to be even bigger. Following the win, Green told Mundine, the "regular WBA super middleweight champion - "The rematch is now on my terms." Green considers Mundine's title an interim belt. Joe Calzaghe is the champ, called WBA "super" champion, labeled as such by the sanctioning body for holding more than one major title. Mundine is looking to take a tough tuneup in the first quarter of the new year and then wants Green.
"I am the official world champion. . . it is in my backyard, it is on my terms if Mundine wants it," Green said. "I promised a long time ago. . . to bring the world title to Perth, I promised I would be world champion and I promised I would win it in my own back yard. You can take the interim world champion(ship) and shove it up your arse. I am the official world champion
