Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who guides the career of WBA/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs), is hoping his fighter overcomes his upcoming assignment at the end of this month in order to position himself for a mandatory fight with full WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs).
Golovkin defends against Martin Murray on February 21 in Monte Carlo. Cotto's plans are unknown after a planned fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fell through. The Puerto Rican star is going to make a voluntary defense prior to facing Golovkin.
"A fight like that would be tremendous, Cotto and Golovkin in Madison Square Garden -that would be a huge fight. As you eluded to, nobody on our team is overlooking Martin Murray. Abel Sanchez, who is Gennady's trainer, and Gennady - are 100% focused on Martin Murray," Loeffler told BoxingScene.com.
"It's my job as a promoter to look ahead and try to position Gennady for the best fights out there. The WBC has decreed that the winner of the Golovkin and Martin Murray fight would be the next challenger. Miguel would have one more fight. It's unfortunate that they couldn't make the fight with Canelo. I thought that would have been a great fight. Regardless of who Cotto fights in May, then Gennady would be the mandatory for him and that would be a tremendous matchup."
