There have been published reports stating that representatives of WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) have offered a fight to the newly crowned WBO belt-holder Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12KOs), who defeated Andy Lee for this title on December 19th.
"That's correct,"confirmed Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions on Wednesday afternoon,"a unification fight would be our first priority, it would be our top priority and we made a significant offer to Frank Warren for that fight."
Loeffler stated,"Our offer was for BJ to fight in the U.S.''
As for when and where this potential match-up would take place,"April sounds right and the venue is still under consideration but MSG (Madison Square Garden) is very interested in that fight,"said Loeffler, who added,"they are very interested in having Gennady since he sold-out the last event."
Golovkin in his last performance on October 17th played to well over 20,000 fans at the Garden as he stopped David Lemieux in eight rounds.
The other question surrounding this card is if flyweight kingpin Roman Gonzalez would be the co-headliner?
''It's not sure yet when Roman's going to fight, if he's going to fight before that date or on that date,"said Loeffler, who entered into a deal where K2 is the stateside promoter for 'Chocolatito' alongside Teiken Promotions.
"Once we finalize Gennady's fight and then we have to work out details with Mr. Honda."
In terms of an opponent for Gonzalez, who appeared on the Golovkin-Lemieux undercard and was impressive in turning back the challenge of Brian Viloria in nine rounds, Loeffler stated,"there hasn't been any opponents selected, yet, for Roman."
