Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, will be a very interested observer in the upcoming mega-fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Cotto-Canelo will take place in November, either on the 7th or the 21st, with HBO Pay-Per-View carrying the event. The fight will take place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.

In several recent interviews, Cotto made it clear that he would demand a catch-weight in his upcoming middleweight fights - at least for the foreseeable future.

He fought Sergio Martinez at 159, Daniel Geale at 157 and now Canelo is taking place at 155.

Cotto defends his catch-weight position by openly admitting that he's not a legitimate middleweight, at least physically. He weighed 155 for Martinez and 153.5 for Geale.

However, Sanchez will challenge any catch-weight demand - if the two boxers are colliding for the WBC championship.

The World Boxing Council has ordered the Cotto-Canelo winner to face Golovkin next.

Sanchez is officially picking Canelo to win the fight. But if Cotto pulls through, then things will get very interesting.

Because of Golovkin's mandatory status, Cotto will be unable to force his hand to accept a catch-weight. The worst case scenario would have the two parties battle with their wallets in a purse bid, but regardless of the purse bid winner - the weight limit would still remain as the full 160 for a mandatory title fight.

Golovkin is a career middleweight. He's weighed in between 159 to 161 for nearly every fight of his unbeaten run. The sole fight of his 33-0 record, where he weighed under 159, came in 2011 when he weighed in at 158.5 for Lajuan Simon (who was knocked out in one).

"We would contest that [if Cotto demanded a catch-weight]. If it was for the title, we wouldn't do that. It's the 160-pound title. But of course that's something that Golovkin and the team would sit down and discuss. There are a lot of concessions for a lot of different reasons, but he's the mandatory for the 160-pound title and not the 155-pound title," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
