According to Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions, he is still attempting to make a fight between middleweight ruler, Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs), and mandatory challenger Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs).
"We're still making progress, still speaking with A l(Haymon) and still trying to work out a deal that's fair for both fighters. I think it's a great fight, it's the number one middleweight versus the number two middleweight. So our goal is to work out a deal and not go to a purse bid. So hopefully we'll have something done in the near future,'' Loeffler tells Boxingscene.com.
Golovkin is the WBA 'super champion', while Jacobs is the organization's 'regular' belt-holder. If this should go to a purse bid Golovkin would be entitled to a 75-25 split.
As for when Loeffler would press for a purse bid, he explained - "There's no deadline as of right now. I look at it as long as we're making progress there's no reason to have any pressure and as long as Al feels the same way, Danny Jacobs feels the same way, then I think we're better off trying to make a deal.
"I know the WBA feels the same way. If two promoters can make a deal with the fighters that's a better situation than entering into a purse bid. That's why we're continuing negotiations with Jacobs. If I didn't think Jacobs wanted the fight or if I didn't think it was possible to work out a deal than we would have been in a purse bid already but I'm trying to do anything I can to try to make the deal happen."
Loeffler, says the goal is to stage this fight - and Golovkin's next fight, period - in the first quarter of 2017. The original hope was for this match-up to take place on December 10th at the Madison Square Garden but this date was tabled as negotiations lingered.
