Gennady Golovkin is still very open to the idea of facing Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez in a trilogy fight.
On Saturday night, Golovkin went through hell to overcome the challenge of Sergiy Derevyanchenko. GGG won a close twelve round unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The scores were 114-113, and two cards of 115-112.
The 37-year-old Golovkin improved to 40-1-1 as he regained the belt he first won in 2015, while Derevyanchenko fell to 13-2 with 10 KOs.
Golovkin had hoped to fight Canelo last month, but he was unable to get the Mexican star on the same page.
Canelo and Golovkin fought to a controversial twelve round split draw in 2017. And Canelo won a twelve round majority decision over Golovkin in their 2018 rematch.
Canelo, in recent interviews, explained that he's not interested in facing Golovkin for a third time. Instead, he will move up to the light heavyweight division to challenge Sergey Kovalev for the WBO world title.
But Canelo also indicates that he's interested in moving back down in weight to defend his middleweight belts.
If Canelo goes in that direction, then Golovkin has no issue in facing him. But as reported earlier on BoxingScene.com, Golovkin is also willing to entertain the idea of a rematch with Derevyanchenko.
“Absolutely I still want Canelo, I’m just open to anybody. There are so many great champions here. Sergiy, a lot of guys. Everything is ready, just call Canelo. If he says yes, let’s do it," Golovkin said.
