Golden Boy Promotions: record, next fight and profile →
While most of the focus on the weekend of September 16th will be on the highly anticipated middleweight clash between IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin and challenger Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, Golden Boy Promotions is staging a televised show on that Friday night from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Hall of Fame coach Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain has ruled out a possible fight between four-division champions Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Angel Cotto, simply because the Puerto Rican superstar just signed a promotional agreement with Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions . Marquez was at one time promoted by Golden Boy and had some of his biggest fights under their banner.
A press conference was held at the Congo Room at L.A. Live on Wednesday afternoon to formally announce Miguel Cotto's August 26th bout versus Yoshihiro Kamegai at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Cotto has just recently entered into a multi-fight deal with Golden Boy Promotions.
Four-division world champion and surefire first ballot Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) will return to Golden Boy Promotions for a multi-fight deal starting with his 12-round bout for the vacant WBO Light Middleweight World Championship against Yoshihiro "El Maestrito" Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs). The fight will be on Saturday August 26 from Carson, Calif's StubHub Center and live on HBO World Championship Boxing starting at 9:45 p.m. EST/PST.
In the past, former four division world champion Miguel Angel Cotto had stated in several interviews that 2017 would be his final year in the sport. But given the current landscape and the circumstances which caused his career to stall out. Cotto has been out of the ring since November 2015, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. He was scheduled to return in February, to face James Kirkland in the main event of an HBO Pay-Per-View. The fight was cancelled after Kirkland withdrew with injury.
Former four division world champion Miguel Angel Cotto will be working in partnership with Golden Boy Promotions for his bout with Japanese junior middleweight contender Yoshihiro Kamegai, according to Miguel Cotto Promotions Executive Hector Soto. As reported a few days ago, Cotto parted ways with his promoter of the last few years, Roc Nation Sports. Cotto signed a three fight agreement with them in early 2015, and there was one fight remaining on the deal - with Kamegai.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya admits that he could have easily matched his biggest star, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs), against opponents who presented far less risk than Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs). Last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, De La Hoya officially announced that a deal was reached for September 16th - with the venue and location to be determined.
After some ups and downs in the last few years, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya feels strongly that his brand is back on top as the premier promotional company in boxing. On September 16th, Golden Boy will be the lead promoter for the biggest boxing event of the year when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) challenges IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).
LAS VEGAS – Eric Gomez didn’t elaborate on what he meant by close. Nevertheless, Golden Boy Promotions’ president said Wednesday that the company is “close” to finalizing a deal for a long-awaited Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fight for September. Gomez quickly added, though, that negotiations for an Alvarez-Golovkin fight could become irrelevant if Alvarez doesn’t defeat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in their Mexican showdown Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena (HBO Pay-Per-View; 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT; $69.99 in HD).
