Hall of Fame coach Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain has ruled out a possible fight between four-division champions Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Angel Cotto, simply because the Puerto Rican superstar just signed a promotional agreement with Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions .
Marquez was at one time promoted by Golden Boy and had some of his biggest fights under their banner.
But Nacho explains that in 2011, Marquez left Golden Boy on very bad terms when he parted ways with their company to jump ship to rival promoter Top Rank in order to secure a trilogy fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Last year, Marquez and Cotto were in discussions for a possible catch-weight bout - but they were unable to agree on a catch-weight.
At that time Cotto was promoted by Roc Nation Sports. He parted ways with Roc Nation a few months ago and signed with Golden Boy. His first bout under Golden Boy's banner takes place on August 26th, when he faces Japanese banger Yoshihiro Kamegai for the WBO junior middleweight title in Los Angeles.
"With Cotto, we're never going to fight him, because Cotto is signed with De La Hoya and we are nothing to De La Hoya. That [fight] can not happen, it could never happen," Nacho told ESPN Deportes.
Marquez has been inactive since May 2014, when he dominated former champion Michael Alvarado.
After dealing with injuries for several years, the 43-year-old boxer is being lined up for a ring return on August 19th in Mexico.
According to Nacho, a lot of experts will be surprised by his performance. However, he says Zanfer Promotions is taking a little longer than expected to finalize the details of the comeback bout.
"He is training very well, very strong. On the day he finally returns to the ring, they will see him and they will be surprised. Although the promoters are very slow, it would take place in the State of Mexico or the Arena Mexico City," Nacho said.
