Eddie Hearn: Fitch Will Referee Froch-Groves Rematch

•May 27, 2014

Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed Charlie Fitch will referee Carl Froch v George Groves II at Wembley on Saturday night. Lengthy discussings, negotiations and objections over the official have been brought to an end after the IBF threw out a late objection from the Groves camp and confirmed Fitch would take charge. The first fight between the two British super-middleweights was stopped controversially by Howard Foster Junior but Hearn remains confident there will be no repeat with the IBF and WBA titles again on the line.

The rematch is only days away and the search for a referee continues. This Saturday night before 80,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium, Carl Froch will defend the IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight titles against George Groves. The initial pick to referee the match was Jack Reiss, but Froch's promoter Eddie Hearn objected to his appointment. The next man, which Hearn liked, was Charlie Fitch.

WBC silver super middleweight champion James DeGale believes Carl Froch was mentally affected in the pre-fight war of words coming into last November's fight with George Groves. Froch, who went down in the first and took some lumps, came back in the second half to stop Groves in controversial fashion to retain the IBF/WBA 'regular' titles. A rematch is booked for this Saturday night before 80,000 fans at Wembley. This time around, DeGale says Froch is taking a step back from the talking and focusing more on the training.

IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch is only days away from his anticipated rematch with domestic rival George Groves, which takes place before a massive crowd of 80,000 fans at Wembley. This is the biggest fight of Froch's career and one of the biggest fights in British boxing history. Froch drew 20,000 fans for last year's rematch victory over Mikkel Kessler and he can't even imagine what it's going to be like to fight before a massive audience that is four times bigger.

Carl Froch has promised fireworks when he "goes to war" with George Groves in their eagerly anticipated rematch this Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Referee Howard Foster controversially stopped Groves when the pair clashed last November, eventually leading the IBF to order a rematch. And speaking at a public workout at Broadmarsh Shopping Centre in Nottingham Froch has promised to bring his game 'A' game to Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. "I've put my body through three months of torture and hell - that's what it's been torture and hell - for the British public because I am going to war," Froch told Sky Sports.

DeGale Has Doubts About Groves' Stamina With Froch

WBC silver super middleweight champion James DeGale has doubts about George Groves' ability to withstand a tough pace for twelve rounds in his rematch with IBF/WBA 'regular' champion Carl Froch, which takes place this coming Saturday night before 80,000 fans at Wembley. Groves started fast last November, when he dropped Froch in the first and then battered him in several of the follow rounds. But Groves visibly slowed down in the second half, as Froch took over, and suffered a controversial TKO defeat in the ninth. Even when Groves won a close decision over DeGale several years ago, he grew very tired in the second half of the contest.

Even if IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch is successful on Saturday night at Wembley, he doubts domestic rival George Groves will ever capture a world title in the future. Froch has serious doubts about Groves' ability to withstand a tough twelve round contest. Last November, Groves controlled most of the first six rounds, but he tired badly in the second half of the contest and saw himself get stopped, controversially, in the ninth round. Groves also tired in the second of his victory against James DeGale.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has backed the decision to name Charlie Fitch as referee for Carl Froch-George Groves II. Hearn last week raised an objection after Jack Reiss was considered as the official, forcing the IBF to seek a replacement for the world title unification clash on May 31st, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The horse trading and mind games surrounding next weekend’s Froch-Groves rematch looks set to continue almost right up to the first bell on 31 May. Groves, of course, got this particular ball rolling when he objected not only to referee Howard Foster, but also campaigned successfully to have neutral officials installed throughout. As a result there will be no British presence either in the ring, or on the judging panel. But exactly who will be deemed acceptable to both parties is threatening to descend into the kind of jury selection process normally associated with high profile American legal trials.

Booth Warns Groves To Avoid Brawling With Froch

•May 23, 2014

Adam Booth, who previously trained George Groves for several years, has warned his former fighter to avoid going to war in the early going with IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Booth, who was recently replaced by Paddy Fitzpatrick, feels Groves has a much higher chance at victory if he sticks to boxing and avoids brawling. Groves brawled with Froch for most of their fight last November. He had success, with scoring a big knockdown in the first round and then pummeling Froch in some of the others. But then he started running out of steam in the second half, which allowed Froch to rally and score a controversial stoppage in the ninth.
