Adam Booth, who previously trained George Groves for several years, has warned his former fighter to avoid going to war in the early going with IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Booth, who was recently replaced by Paddy Fitzpatrick, feels Groves has a much higher chance at victory if he sticks to boxing and avoids brawling.
Groves brawled with Froch for most of their fight last November. He had success, with scoring a big knockdown in the first round and then pummeling Froch in some of the others. But then he started running out of steam in the second half, which allowed Froch to rally and score a controversial stoppage in the ninth.
The rematch takes place on May 31 at Wembley Stadium.
"I think George got to greedy," Booth told Sky Sports Ringside. "He threw too many shots and allowed Carl just a couple of moments, just to claw his way back into the fight, and it was one of those brief moments when Howard Foster jumped in.
"It was pretty much a one-sided fight though. I expect George to box with more discipline, with more control and not to get greedy and impatient when he has success. I am pretty sure he wasn't told to go out there and be gung-ho and whether he didn't listen or do what was being told, I don't know."
"All I know is, he threw too many shots and was losing the impact of the punches that were landed, allowing Carl those moments. "When George was getting a lot of success, he was charging in and the one thing you can't do against Carl Froch is slug. It ended up as a bit of a slugfest and Carl will do that all day."
