Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is not overly confident of Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) actually stepping in the ring with Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs) in the near future.

Cotto is the WBC's middleweight champion and is scheduled to make the first defense of that title in June against an opponent to be determined. Golovkin, who is the WBC's interim-champion and holds the WBA/IBO world titles, is going to fight on May 16th against Willie Monroe. The World Boxing Council has ordered that Cotto must face the winner of Golovkin-Monroe next.

Loeffler reached out to Cotto's team, hoping to get Golovkin in the ring with Cotto in June - but he received no response on the matter. Cotto recently signed a three fight promotional agreement with Roc Nation Sports.

"It's hard to say [how confident we are of getting Cotto]. I don't have a good feeling with Cotto because we reached out to him for this fight in June and we really got no response. They are going to fight on June 6th and what they are going to do afterwards [we don't know]. The WBC has mandated that the winner of that fight on June 6th and the winner of this fight - have to fight each other," Loeffler said.

"If they don't agree to fight, they will be stripped of the middleweight title, and we will become the full champion because Gennady has the interim and he is the mandatory. Like I said before, we can't force them to get in the ring. Whatever deal we work out with Cotto, would be in [Cotto's favor]. If him and Cotto fought at Madison Square Garden, it would be a huge fight. It would be completely sold out. Based on what he drew last year against Geale, it would be a great promotion. It would be structured in a way that it would make financial sense for Cotto."
