In recent years Gennady Golovkin has been as active as any world champion in the sport. But his 2016 has gotten off to a bit of a late start as he faces Dominic Wade this Saturday night from the Forum in Inglewood, California in his first appearance of the year.
As K2 Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions negotiated an agreement with the WBC that would allow both Golovkin and Saul Alvarez to have fights before they enter into negotiations for a fall showdown, it delayed Golovkin's return to the ring.
But the defending WBA, IBO and IBF middleweight titlist would like to fight at least twice more this year, whether he faces the Mexican star or not.
"It's not only his preference, it's really his order to me and Abel ( Sanchez)," explained the managing director of K2 Promotions, Tom Loeffler.
"He wants to fight at least three times a year. He fought four times in 2013 and he really likes the activity. He's the most active world champion right now in the sport of boxing and that's what's really propelled him.
"He's always in the news, people either talking about his last knockout or talking about what's coming up and that's what really propelled him in just over three years to the top of boxing, especially here in America where he's stacked his claim and made it his priority. He wants to fight here. The activity is an important part of his career."
Since making his Stateside debut in 2012, Golovkin (34-0, 31 KO's) has fought eleven times.
