Gary Buckland: record, next fight and profile →
Andrew Selby is the latest name to be confirmed for the big world title-topped show in Cardiff next month. The British flyweight champion (5-0, 3 KOs) won the crown with a 12-round decision victory over Louis Norman, the former English champion, at the Ice Arena on May 14, live on Channel 5.
Liverpool - Cardiff’s Gary “Dynamo” Buckland (9st 12lbs 4oz) was due to meet Scotty Cardle for the British lightweight title tonight only to see the fight go down the pan when Cardle pulled out due to an injury late last week. Buckland, a former British titlist, met Liverpool’s late replacement Sean “Masher” Dodd (9st 11lbs 4oz) in a scheduled 10-threes that had been pencilled in as an eight rounder the previous day.
Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd will now face Gary Buckland at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports, after injury ruled Scotty Cardle was forced out of the clash through injury. Popular Birkenhead Lightweight Dodd already had a place on the bill but now takes centre-stage against the Welshman with the winner set to face Cardle for the Lonsdale belt in Liverpool on November 7.
It was a tale of two pressers earlier today as Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn hosted a double press conference in Liverpool to announce two shows at the city's Echo Arena. First up, the promoter revealed that Liverpool’s Stephen Smith (22-1, 12 KOs) will fight Italy’s Devis Boschiero (37-3-1, 19 early) in a final eliminator for the IBF Super featherweight belt on September 19. The Smith-Boschiero card will also feature Scotty Cardle’s (18-0, 5 stoppages) British lightweight title defence against former British Super featherweight titlist Gary Buckland (30-6, 10 KOs). “Boschiero is a huge fight for Stephen in a Final Eliminator for the IBF title,” stated Hearn when confirming the fight.
Gary Buckland looks to become the first fighter in history to claim top honors in two separate Prizefight tournaments. The 28-year old Welsh contender is the odds-on favorite among the eight-man Prizefighter: Lightweight field, as action throws down Saturday evening at York Hall in Bethnal Green, England.
Prizefighter favourite Gary Buckland has been handed a tough quarter-final clash against the dangerous Floyd Moore. The Welshman, a former Prizefighter champion in 2010, will have to get past the Fareham man if he wants to win the trophy for a second time at York Hall this Saturday night. Moore has picked up 10 wins, with seven inside the distance, and the draw has set up a potentially-explosive clash with Buckland, who has been involved in a string of exciting battles.
Gary Buckland and Stephen Foster Jnr lead the line-up for the Prizefighter Lightweights III at York Hall, Bethnal Green on December 6, live on Sky Sports – with Martin J. Ward facing Maxi Hughes on the show in an eliminator for the British Super Featherweight title. Buckland returns to the scene of his Prizefighter Super Featherweights win in November 2010 where he saw off Stevie Bell in the quarter-finals, dramatically wiped out Gary Sykes in the first round of their semi-final before knocking out Derry Mathews in the second round of the final to lift the trophy.
Richard Commey (18-0, 17KOs) claimed the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title with a unanimous points victory over Welshman Gary Buckland (28-5). Epping-based Ghanaian Commey, 27, was taken the distance for the first time in his career after winning all of his previous fights inside eight rounds, but was a big winner on the judges' cards - 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110 - at Bethnal Green's York Hall. It was Buckland's second successive defeat after his split-decision loss to fellow Welshman Gavin Rees in May.
The probable fight of the weekend in Britain will take place amongst the heat and the history of the old York Hall in London but won’t be shown on television. As some of British boxing’s A-Listers turn out at Liverpool’s Echo Arena during a Sky Sports broadcast, Richard Commey and Gary Buckland will square off in a potentially mouth-watering clash to decide if the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title will be going to Ghana or Wales. In a show promoted by Steve Goodwin and to be screened live and free on www.boxingevolution.tv, Commey will be looking to make Buckland, a former British super featherweight champion, victim number 18 on his unbeaten record where none of the Ghanaian’s opponents have yet to go beyond eight rounds.
“It’s a big fight and it’s for the Commonwealth title so let’s go for it.” Gary Buckland 28-4 (9 KOs) likes to test himself. His record doesn’t lie. Six of his last seven fights have either been contested for a British title or fought against a former world champion (twice). He’s won four, lost two, and been involved in a fight of the year contender (against Gavin Rees in Feb 2014) and on the receiving end of a knockout of the year contender (against Stephen Smith in Aug 2013). On Saturday night at the iconic York Hall in London, Buckland will once again strap on his boots and gloves and meet another challenge head on. But this one is of the unknown variety. Ghana’s Richard Commey 17-0 (17 KOs) is the threat as the pair meet in a potential doozy for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title on a Goodwin Promotions bill which will be broadcast live and free on www.boxingevolution.tv.
