•Mar 21, 2014

Maurico Herrera gave a great account of himself last Saturday night when he gave unified Junior Welterweight champion Danny Garcia a much tougher than expected fight. While Herrera was not awarded a victory, there were plenty of people who felt he maybe should’ve got the nod in the contest. When Herrera spoke to BoxingScene earlier this week, he confirmed getting a rematch with Garcia will be his first priority as he would like to prove he was the real winner.

By Cliff Rold - Let’s be clear: Mauricio Herrera won the Jr. Welterweight Championship of the World. Two of the official judges said different last Saturday. Open scoring let us know the third judge, who had Mauricio Herrera winning by two after eight rounds, somehow found three of the last four rounds to give lineal World Jr. Welterweight Champion Danny Garcia. Boxing is great at making us laugh when it should make us scream. Mauricio Herrera picked up his fourth official loss last Saturday. To most who saw the fight, he should have had his hand raised. As compiled by Boxing News, some seventy percent of boxing media providing scores for the fight felt Herrera won the bout. Another 17% and change had it a draw. The fight was certainly close, and the minority who saw Garcia the winner need not hang their head. Everyone is wrong sometimes. Herrera deserved that win. He should milk it for everything it’s worth.

It’s the Apollo Creed line that never gets old: I won but I didn’t beat him. That’s how Danny Garcia should feel today. He won last Saturday night, retaining the World Jr. Welterweight title. He didn’t beat Mauricio Herrera. While cries of outright robbery are a tad overstated, Herrera appeared to do enough to earn the crown even as open scoring told viewers throughout that he wasn’t going to get the nod. Adding insult to injury, the one judge who had Herrera leading after eight rounds somehow came out with a draw.

Angel Garcia, father/trainer of WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, says Mauricio Herrera did not do enough to win the titles on Saturday night in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Herrera put forth a very good effort and fell on the cards with a majority decision. One judge had scored it a 114-114 draw, the exact score that several experts tallied at ringside. Angel complains that Herrera fought dirty and the referee allowed it to continue. He wasn't impressed with Danny's victory, but fully believes his son pulled in enough rounds to get the decision.
